The Greenup County Courthouse Square in Greenup, Kentucky, located on the Ohio River, was a pivotal legal hub for the Underground Railroad. It hosted numerous legal proceedings related to slavery and freedom.

Since its establishment in 1803, this square has served as the continuous home for both the county courthouse and jail. The second courthouse (1816-1937), which stood on the present Main Street site, was the venue for a variety of cases, including a murder trial following a slave revolt, multiple trials for aiding escapes and many landmark freedom suits.

From roughly 1827 to 1909, the adjacent Greenup County Jail held freedom seekers awaiting sale, defendants in slave-related trials and even kidnapped free Black individuals. This history highlights the square’s significance as a major legal battleground where the fight for freedom was contested.

The Greenup County Courthouse Square in Greenup, Kentucky is among 32 new listings added by the U.S. National Park Service to the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom Program. It joins more than 800 sites, facilities and programs already in the network that provide insight into the diverse experiences of freedom seekers who bravely escaped slavery and the allies who assisted them.
