Baseball announces 2015 Summer Youth baseball camp

Baseball - Tue, Jun. 2, 2015

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (Baseball) – Shawnee State University Baseball Head Coach Chris Moore is pleased to announce June 29-30 and July 6-7, as the dates for Shawnee State University Winter Youth Baseball Camp.

This is a fantastic opportunity for boys and girls between the ages of 6-14 to learn the fundamental building blocks of baseball directly from the SSU coaching staff and players.

Camp will run each morning Branch Rickey Park in Portsmouth, Ohio, from 9 a.m. until noon, featuring defensive instruction for infield and outfield play, offensive instruction and pitching and catching.

Each camper will receive in-depth instruction on his or her play in what promises to be a fun and informative camp.

If you want to be a part of the fun, please register online at shawneestatebaseballcamps.com. Cost for the two-day camp is $40 per player. Cost for both camps is $70 per player.

Shawnee State University Head Baseball Coach Chris Moore is pleased to announce Sunday, December 28th as the date for the seventh annual Winter Prospect Showcase. The showcase will be held at the James A. Rhodes Athletic Center in Portsmouth, OH and will be conducted by the SSU coaching staff directly. Camp will consist of a pro-style workout along with a short intro to the baseball program. Cost for the camp is $30 for individual players and is open to all players ages 15-21. We will be doing camp a little bit differently this winter due to the popularity of our last camp here at SSU by capping the number of athletes at 40. If we exceed that number of interested players, we will open another session on the same date for later that afternoon. Again, we would cap the second session at 40 players. This will allow the coaching staff to continue to give in-depth evaluations to the players in attendance. More details for camp as well as registration can be found at shawneestatebaseballcamps.com. The Bears are coming off an historic five year stretch that has seen the Bears accumulate 162 victories, two conference championships, and one NAIA Regional appearance. In those five years, the team has been to the conference championship game three times while averaging more than 32 wins per season. Camps at Shawnee State have proven to be a successful recruiting tool for the program as at least one player has signed to play at Shawnee State from every single camp hosted by the current staff. There are 13 players on the current roster that have attended camp in the past. Registration on the 28th begins at 8am and camp starts at 9am.

Additionally, I want to let everyone know the camp will go on regardless of weather. Right now it looks to be a little cool that day and I am very much hoping the rain holds off. Our itinerary has us hitting and pitching inside our gym and then we will do our running and defensive evals outside. I will get out more information as we get closer to the date.

This is going to be the biggest camp in the history of Shawnee State Baseball and it looks to be the most talent we have ever assembled on paper. There will be plenty of opportunity for players to show us and all the other coaches in attendance what they can do. As a coaching staff, we are very much looking forward to Sunday.

Great news as we have added another school to our Small School Showcase Series. The University of Cincinnati will be represented and it is my great pleasure to share that the Bearcats will be represented by our former head coach here at Shawnee State University, Ted Tom. UC will be our only D1 school in attendance on the 9th. The Bearcats are led by Head Coach Ty Neal, who is in his second season at Cincinnati and is regarded as one of the best young head coaches in the region as well as an outstanding recruiter.

We are cancelling the event for October 25th due to low turnout. A smarter coach would have known it was an ACT test date. However, the good news is we have plenty of coaches and players set and ready to go for Nov. 9th and we are very excited about the players coming in to work out for all of us. Stay posted to this page to find out about any other details about camp and other SSU Baseball news.

Head Coach Luther Bramblett and his St. Catharine College Patriots, NAIA out of St. Catharine, KY., are the latest quality program to commit to our Small School Showcase Series. SCC is a fellow Mid-South Conference member and were the team that knocked our beloved Bears out of the MSC tournament last year. Coach Bramblett has overseen the the seamless transition from succesful JUCO program to succesful NAIA as the head coach at St. Catharine and has amassed well over 400 wins in his 13 years at the post.

Assistant coach Bobby Segal will be representing WVC and not only is he one of the great young minds in coaching right now, he also played for Coach Moore while they were both at Indiana.
