Happy National Mascot Day to the most recognizable bird on campus!

NIC's Cardinal tradition dates back to 1939, when student Glen Nogle suggested "Cardinals" as the college's new mascot. Inspired by the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team, the name was selected and has represented NIC ever since.

In 1986, the mascot was officially named Cecil in honor of former Idaho Gov. Cecil Andrus.

Nearly 90 years later, Cecil remains a familiar face at athletic events, student activities and celebrations across campus!

Happy National Mascot Day, Cecil!
