The SUNY Potsdam community is mourning the tragic loss of Emily Smith, a sophomore business administration major and member of the Potsdam Bears women’s basketball team.

Emily was a talented student-athlete, teammate, friend and leader whose impact was deeply felt across campus. Our hearts are with her family, friends, teammates, coaches and all who knew and loved her during this incredibly difficult time.

Jerry Welsh Gymnasium is serving as a memorial space for members of the campus community to leave flowers or messages in Emily’s memory. 🐻💙🏀

Working together outside the HEARTH—the College’s exciting Hand-crafted, Experiential, Archaeological Research and Teaching Hub—students in SUNY Potsdam’s Experimental Archaeology course brought ancient technology to life. 🌊🛶

Under the guidance of Dr. Tim Messner, the class constructed coracles last week—simple woven boats believed to be among the earliest forms of watercraft ever used. Traditionally covered with animal hides, these student-built versions use canvas treated with wood glue to make them watertight before their big launch.

“We’ve been talking about different relationships between people and the environment through time, and how technology facilitates that relationship,” Messner said. “So, they are putting their skills to the test by making these boats, and they’ll be putting them on the water.”
