Please join us in welcoming The Crane School of Music’s new Dean, Dr. Andrew Mast!

Dean Mast joins us from the Lawrence University Conservatory of Music, where he served as Associate Dean, Kimberly-Clark Professor of Music, and Director of Bands. He also brings extensive public school music education experience and is an elected member of the American Bandmasters Association.

Alumni News: The University of Florida School of Music recently announced that Allie Brault (2020, Music Education/Vocal Performance) will be joining their faculty this fall as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Voice. We’ll let UF sing her praises – they wrote, “Brault is a versatile performer and teacher from Long Island, New York. Her research has been presented at universities, synagogues and international conferences, and has been supported by multiple prestigious awards and fellowships. In 2021, Brault made her Off-Broadway debut in David Harrower’s "Blackbird." Her operatic roles include Blanche in "Dialogues of the Carmelites," Mabel in "The Pirates of Penzance," and Wesley in the world premiere of Tom Cipullo’s "Mayo." An active concert artist, her repertoire spans from Baroque to 21st-century works, including the U.S. premiere of Sacchini’s Giacchè mia sposa sei.”

Allie is also a DMA candidate in voice pedagogy at the University of Maryland, and after she graduated from the Crane School of Music, she earned her MM from Penn State.

Congratulations Allie!

We're looking forward to seeing some future Crane School of Music students at our Crane meet & greet on Long Island, coming up on Tuesday, June 2, from 7pm to 9 pm at Suffolk County Community College’s Ammerman Campus. All the details are at: https://apply.potsdam.edu/portal/crane_meet_greet

We'll have SUNY Potsdam admissions counselor (and Crane alum) Allie Evens and Crane School Interim Dean Dr. David Heuser, joined by local Long Island Crane alumni. A sad sharing: orchestra director and music teacher Joseph Gumpper (Crane class of 1993) died unexpectedly last weekend. Joseph taught in the Shenendehowa School District (north of Albany) for well over two decades, serving as High School Orchestra Director since 2006. He also led the Empire State Youth Orchestra's String Orchestra, maintained a private violin studio, and conducted musical pit bands and community groups locally.

“For so many within ESYO, Joe was far more than a conductor. He was a steady and compassionate presence, someone who made students feel seen, valued, and capable of more than they imagined," the ESYO shared. “Mr. Gumpper was an outstanding educator who was wholly committed to his students. His loss to our system and community is profound,” said Frank Rosselli, Academic Administrator for Fine Arts.

As the semester winds down, we’ve been honoring some of the music majors who were awarded Crane School of Music scholarships and honors. Many thanks to all of those whose donations and gifts make these awards possible, and to everyone who joined us in our celebration last evening in the Leman Hall River Room, where we were serenaded by the incredible Giroux Honors Jazz Combo. Thank you also to the faculty who helped nominate and select these students (never easy when there are so many wonderful ones to choose from!) and of course, CONGRATULATIONS to our students!
