Crane Opera Ensemble The Crane Opera Ensemble at The Crane School of Music, SUNY Potsdam

The award-winning Crane Opera Ensemble is a significant source for opera and music theatre in the North Country region of New York State. One of the many performing ensembles of the renown Crane School, SUNY Potsdam, the Crane Opera Ensemble provides exciting opportunities for students to experience all facets of opera performance and production through rehearsals, coachings, and classes related t

o performance practices and production techniques.

Two fully-staged productions are produced each year (one with orchestra and one with a chamber instrumental group or piano). In addition, an Opera Scenes Workshop provides students the opportunity to study a partial role and perform it in an informal venue.

The Crane Opera Ensemble is proud to host the Domenic J. Pellicciotti Opera Composition Prize, which was founded by Dr. Gary C. Jaquay ’67 to honor his life partner, Domenic J. Pellicciotti, an ardent fan of opera. The award seeks to encourage and acknowledge the creation of new opera works that explore themes related to tolerance, inclusion or the celebration of diversity. Awarded every four years, a panel of distinguished opera professionals awards a $25,000 commission and full production to a composer/librettist team. Tom Cipullo was the recipient of the 2018 Domenic J. Pellicciotti Opera Composition Prize, for his work, Mayo, which received its premiere by the Crane Opera Ensemble in November 2018. Composer Timothy Takach and librettist Caitlin Vincent were recipients of the 2024 Domenic J. Pellicciotti Opera Composition Prize for their opera, Computing Venus, which the Crane Opera Ensemble premiered in November 2024.

The wait is over.
Crane Opera Ensemble’s 2026–2027 season has arrived.

This fall, we present Zach Redler’s “The Falling and the Rising”.

A gripping contemporary opera of sacrifice, memory, and healing. After an explosion in Afghanistan leaves a young soldier suspended between life and death, she journeys through memory, trauma, and the voices of those who love her.

Blending lyric intensity with emotional immediacy, the opera explores service, loss, resilience, and the long path toward recovery. Powerful, haunting, and deeply human, it is a work that speaks to our own moment with unusual force.

November 13–15, 2026

In Spring 2027, we present Händel’s “Semele”.

A dazzling and dangerous tale of ambition, seduction, and ruin.

Drawn into the world of the gods, Semele longs not only for love, but for power, glory, and immortality itself.
What begins as desire quickly becomes obsession, as vanity and divine jealousy set catastrophe into motion.

Sensual, theatrical, and glittering with some of Händel’s most brilliant music, Semele is both intoxicating entertainment and sharp moral drama.
