When an electric motor fails, the real story started long before the shutdown. Smith Services™ can provide a variety of preventative measures and systems to help extend the lifespan of your critical rotating equipment. One of the most common and cost-effective preventative maintenance measures you can take is current signature analysis (CSA).

CSA focuses on the electric motor’s current waveforms, to detect any out of the ordinary conditions. These measurable changes can help detect:

- Broken rotor bars
- Static or Dynamic Eccentricity
- Load issues
- Mechanical and electrical failure signals

This method of failure detection is effective but only tells a portion of the state of your motor. The parameter being tested is the current which only shows you downstream information. CSA testing is a regularly used diagnostic service that should be completed on a regular basis and can help identify any potential catastrophic failures. Check back next month to learn more of the full story, where we’ll discuss electric signature analysis (ESA) and how it can work with CSA to reveal more about the health of your equipment.

Aluminum is one of the world’s most recyclable materials, making it highly effective across a wide range of industrial applications. At one of the nation’s leading aluminum recycling and production facilities, the maintenance team noticed arcing and performance issues on a 1,500 HP synchronous crusher motor at the start of the recycling process. These electric motors help process the equivalent of 20 billion cans per year, making reliable operation essential.

Smith Services™ responded immediately, transporting the motor more than 500 miles to their repair facility. Our team diagnosed and corrected multiple slip‑ring, brush ring, and lubrication issues, fully reconditioning the unit in just three weeks. This rapid turnaround prevented extended downtime and helped keep both recycling operations and new aluminum production on track.

In today’s industrial environments, electric motors are expected to run harder, longer, and under increasingly demanding conditions. Even the most reliable motor can develop hidden electrical or mechanical issues long before any outward symptoms appear. Motor Current Evaluation (MCE) gives maintenance teams the ability to analyze a motor’s electrical signature, identifying early‑stage problems across power quality, insulation, stator windings, rotor condition, and air‑gap alignment. MCE is commonly performed using PdMA‑style testing and combines both offline and online diagnostics to deliver a data‑driven picture of motor health.

Why MCE Testing Matters:

- Early fault detection helps identify issues long before they become failures.
- Reduced maintenance costs support planned repairs and more accurate budgeting.
- Improved efficiency helps motors operate at peak performance.
- Extended equipment life protects windings, insulation, and rotor components.
- Better safety and compliance help maintain stable, code‑compliant electrical conditions.

Smith Services™ offers a variety of testing, diagnostic, and preventative maintenance solutions to help ensure your motors maintain peak performance. To learn more about our electric motor repair and diagnostic capabilities, visit: https://ow.ly/xaZp50ZyAgh

Client Success Story

Our team recently completed critical repairs on a heater drain pump motor in just a few days, returning the customer’s equipment ahead of peak system demand. The Smith team removed the existing bearings, repaired the opposite drive end (ODE) Babbitt bearing, performed a full polish on the drive end (DE) Babbitt bearing, and reinstalled the components. This rapid repair turnaround helped our customer return their plant to stable operation, avoiding a 225 megawatt (MW) derate.

A heater drain pump motor is an essential component in an energy facility, helping to maintain thermal efficiency across the steam cycle. This motor powers the heater drain pump, which returns high temperature drain water from the heaters back into the generating system, preventing the heaters from flooding, stabilizing water levels, and helping to support maximum output. Reliable maintenance and operation of this motor is critical during high demand periods when every megawatt counts.

This pump motor utilizes Babbitt bearings for their high-load capacity, performance, and reliability. Babbitt bearings provide a precision machined hydrodynamic load surface for high-capacity rotating equipment. Their tin or lead based white metal lining offers exceptional conformability, embeddability, and fatigue resistance, allowing the bearing to maintain a stable oil film under heavy radial and axial loads. In turbines, compressors, large motors, and industrial gearboxes, Babbitt bearings help support tight tolerances, absorb vibration, and protect critical components by preventing shaft scoring during transient or off nominal lubrication conditions.
