Economist Andrew Zimbalist, author of “Baseball and Billions” and a leading voice on sports economics, joins Princeton's Orley Ashenfelter to discuss the business of baseball, the UFC's monopsony power over fighters, and the future of college athletics.

“You can hire a statistician for much, much, much less than you can hire a baseball player. And because statisticians are so much cheaper, teams are continuing to do it. So, an average team in baseball now probably has an analytics department of eight to 12 people.”

Professor Jianqing Fan, the Frederick L. Moore ’18 Professor of Finance at Princeton University, is among the 120 members elected this year to the National Academy of Sciences.

Election to the Academy is widely considered one of the highest honors a scientist can receive. Fan’s election is a testament to his exceptional contributions to the field and his groundbreaking research. Congratulations to Fan on this well-deserved honor!

Congratulations to Mark Aguiar and Atif Mian on their election to the American Academy of Arts & Sciences! The prestigious association recognizes leaders and accomplished individuals across academia, the arts, industry, journalism, philanthropy, policy, research, and science.

Aguiar is the the Walker Professor of Economics and International Finance and the Co-director of the Griswold Center for Economic Policy Studies. His research in macroeconomics focuses on models of consumption and savings, emerging market business cycles, sovereign debt, and capital taxation.

Mian is the John H. Laporte, Jr. Class of 1967 Professor of Public Policy and Finance and the Director of the Julis-Rabinowitz Center for Public Policy and Finance. His research centers on connections between financial markets and the macroeconomy, emphasizing the role played by political, governance, and organizational constraints in shaping the effectiveness and scope of financial markets.
