The Princeton Graduate School welcomed hundreds of new graduate students on August 26, at an assembly kicking off a two-day Orientation. Graduate School staff cheered as students arrived at Richardson Auditorium to hear remarks from Dean of the Graduate School Rodney Priestley, Princeton University President Christopher L. Eisgruber, associate deans of the Graduate School, alumni leaders, students and faculty.

Eisgruber said that graduate students are “critical to every aspect of what this university does, from teaching to learning to research and to service. You bring tremendous creativity, diversity and talent from throughout the world, and I am so happy that you are here.”

Priestley announced at the beginning of the program that the Graduate School's theme for the academic year is “Thriving as a Global Community of Scholars,” and added that belonging to such a community benefits domestic and international students alike. (Image 2)

“Ultimately, being a thriving global community of scholars is about impact,” Priestley said. “You have joined a community that spans disciplines, cultures, and continents. Pursue your work boldly. And help us demonstrate what a thriving global community of scholars can achieve.”

Students also heard from academic and administrative deans who encouraged students to take advantage of the many kinds of support available, followed by a Q&A panel of faculty and graduate students, who offered thoughts on success in graduate school.

The proceedings concluded in Richardson Auditorium with welcomes from Princeton Alumni leaders and the singing of the University's alma mater, Old Nassau.

POV: You've been in Princeton University Graduate School Orientation for two days, your head is spinning with new information and new people, and then dinner gives off Harry Potter vibes.

The G1s gathered for dinner in historic Procter Hall on the grounds of the Graduate College on the last night of Orientation, and yes, the Gothic setting is pretty spectacular. Add delicious food and a dining team that makes everyone feel at home, and you have a great way to kick off grad school.

1 & 2. Following an inspiring welcome from Princeton University President Christopher Eisgruber, Dean Rodney Priestley addresses Princeton's 670 incoming graduate students. Students listened attentively as Priestley discussed this year's Graduate School theme: Thriving as a Global Community of Scholars.
3. The Graduate School deans who lead Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, Finance and Administration, Access, Diversity and Inclusion, and Professional Development provide an overview of resources available to support students.
4-7. A student and faculty panel provides perspective on success in graduate school, including (4) Erik Sorenson, professor of Princeton University - Chemistry; Lisa Margulis, Professor of Department of Music at Princeton University ; (5) Jan Ertl, Graduate Student Government of Princeton University president and Princeton University - Department of Economics graduate student; (6) Grace Monk, grad student in comparative literature; and Hope Crockett, Princeton SPIA grad student.
8. Ryan Ruskin '90, president of Princeton Alumni, and Natalie Berkman *18, president of the Association of Princeton Graduate Alumni, had fun explaining Princeton traditions, including beer jackets and blazers.

This morning, we're kicking off Orientation Week at the Princeton University Graduate School with the Graduate Scholars Program (GSP) Retreat.

GSP is a peer-to-peer mentoring community hosted by the Graduate School's Access, Diversity and Inclusion team. The annual retreat gives new students a chance to meet each other and their GSP mentors before the academic year officially begins.

During the day, incoming members of the 2026-2027 GSP cohort will learn about campus, hear about GSP programming planned for the year, and be welcomed by Dean of the Graduate School Rodney Priestley. Raghuveer Vinukollu, who received his Ph.D. in civil and environmental engineering in 2011, will speak with students about his graduate school experience and career journey.

Participation in the GSP is optional and open to all incoming Princeton graduate students.

As we count down the final day until the Graduate School's Orientation, we're grateful to the Princeton Alumni clubs worldwide for welcoming incoming international graduate students to our Global Community of Scholars.

Over the summer, the Princeton Club of India hosted send-off gatherings in Delhi and Mumbai to welcome newly admitted students to the Princeton University community. Nearly 70 incoming students, alumni and their guests came together to celebrate. Six incoming graduate students attended.

In Mumbai, Larissa Guimarães *21 and Anshuman Malur *03 co-hosted a gathering that included attending an interactive art exhibition exploring human interaction, digital technology and nature. The group then gathered at a cafe for canapés and conversation. Alumni and current students fondly shared memories of Old Nassau while giving the new admits a glimpse of the incredible journey ahead.

In Delhi, Ajita Agarwal *22 co-hosted a gathering with two undergraduate alumni that ran late into the evening and needed a second venue to hold everyone who showed up.

As we count down the final days to the Graduate School's Orientation, we're grateful to the Princeton Alumni clubs worldwide who welcomed incoming international graduate students to our Global Community of Scholars.

Over the summer, Princeton Alumni Association of Taiwan hosted a brunch for new students, including three graduate students. Attended by alumni and undergraduates as well, the brunch was a fun celebration.
