The Critical Review’s Editor and Writer of the Month for October are Haley Seo and Cerulean Ozarow. Thank you for all of your hard work!

Haley is a senior from Los Angeles, California concentrating in Applied Math-Biology, with plans to go to medical school following a gap year post-graduation. Haley joined The Critical Review in the fall of 2020 and wrote for four semesters before becoming an editor. She loves the Critical Review because she gets a behind-the-scenes look at students’ honest feedback on course experiences (sometimes for classes she had never heard of before). At Brown, Haley’s favorite classes have been EAST1090: Translating Korean: Fiction, Poetry, and Film and APMA0360: Applied Partial Differential Equations. We are so thankful for all of your hard work, Haley!

Cerulean is a computer science concentrator from Brooklyn, New York who plans to teach, write and work in educational policy following graduation. Cerulean joined The Critical Review last semester and has particularly enjoyed getting to know about courses that he may not have had the opportunity to learn about otherwise. Cerulean decided to join the Critical Review after spending much of his first year at Brown browsing the website for course reviews — “I was too big a CR fanboy to not write for it,” he said. At Brown, Cerulean has enjoyed taking PHYS0270: Astronomy and Astrophysics. Thank you so much for your continued dedication to The Critical Review, Cerulean!

The Critical Review’s Editor and Writer of the Month for October are Zach Weachter and Emily Hinds. Thank you for all of your hard work!

Zach, a senior from New Jersey’s Haddon Township, is a Cognitive Neuroscience and Computer Science concentrator. Zach began writing for The Critical Review during their sophomore year at Brown and became an editor their next semester. Zach says that their favorite part of being a member of The Critical Review is being able to contribute to a critical aspect of the “student experience at Brown, especially in the context of the open curriculum.” Zach’s favorite course at Brown is CSCI0111, Computing Foundations: Data, a class that helped them discover their passion for Computer Science. Thank you so much for your continued dedication to The Critical Review, Zach!

Emily is a junior from Seattle, Washington concentrating in Computer Science and French and Francophone Studies, with plans to study abroad in Paris next semester. Emily joined The Critical Review because she wanted to get involved with an organization on campus that helps students. Her favorite course at Brown has been EGYT1310: Introduction to Classical Hieroglyphic Egyptian Writing and Language. Although Emily does not study Egyptology, she loved learning about a topic outside of her primary fields of study. We are so thankful for all of your hard work, Emily!

The Critical Review’s Editor and Writer of the Month for April are Alannah Rivera and Ayla Kim! Thank you for all of the hard working you've been putting into the CR!

Our Editor of the Month is Alannah Rivera. Alannah is a junior from the Washington DC area. She is double concentrating in urban studies and art history. Alannah joined the Critical Review in Fall 2020 and has been editing for us since Spring 2021. Alannah says, “I've always loved the process of editing and refining writing to be its best, so the CR is a great way to do that while helping students at Brown navigate their academic journeys.” Her favorite course at Brown was URBN1871A (once URBN1280): Heritage in the Metropolis: Remembering and Preserving the Urban Past. Thank you so much for your continued dedication to the Critical Review, Alannah!

Our Writer of the Month is Ayla Kim. Ayla signed up to write a whopping 18 reviews for us this semester! Ayla is from Fort Lee, NJ: home to the Koreatown of the state and the most congested bridge in the world. She is a freshman intending to double concentrate in Behavioral Decision Sciences and Economics, or just concentrate in Education Studies. Ayla joined the CR at the beginning of this semester after feeling overwhelmed by the 30 courses she wanted to take in the following semesters; writing for the CR has improved her understanding of different departments and types of classes at Brown and has helped her hone in on potential future courses. She think this knowledge will also be useful for recommending courses when she's a Meiklejohn next year! Ayla’s favorite thing about being part of the CR is the inside look she’s gotten into student evaluations of courses, which has informed her own course selections for future semesters and shaped her academic interests. Her favorite course that she’s taken at Brown was GNSS0120: Introduction to Gender and Sexuality Studies with Professor Denise Davis (https://thecriticalreview.org/search/GNSS/0120), which taught her how to critically observe gender and sexuality through various lenses (historical, socioeconomic, ethnographic, etc.) We are so appreciative of all your contributions, Ayla!

We're excited to announce the first ever Critical Review Editor and Writer of the Month!! We will be highlighting members of our incredible team every month this semester.

Our Editor of the Month is Kaitlyn Mi. Kaitlyn is a senior from Nashville, TN who joined the Critical Review way back in her freshman year! Kaitlyn is studying Cognitive Neuroscience at Brown and will be getting her Masters in Public Health (MPH) at Dartmouth following graduation. Kaitlyn's favorite part of writing and editing for the Critical Review is that she's able to read all about fun classes in other departments. Her favorite course that she's taken at Brown is "Medical Illustration" (PLME0400). Thank you so much for being such a valuable member of the Critical Review these past few years Kaitlyn! We will miss you so much.

Our Writer of the Month is Laura Chen! Laura is a sophomore from New Orleans, LA concentrating in Health and Human Biology. Laura joined the Critical Review during her first semester of freshman year. Laura loves "that by writing and compiling reviews, we are really helping students embrace the open curriculum and explore courses they're truly interested in by providing insightful information about each class offered here." Her favorite course at Brown is "Intro to Acting and Directing" (TAPS0030), because the professor was amazing and the course exposed students to a very wide range of topics surrounding theatre arts! Thanks so much for all your contributions to the Critical Review, Laura!
