It’s Official: Congratulations to Brown University’s Newest Ph.D. Graduates! 🎓🐻✨

The hoods have been placed, and a spectacular chapter has officially come to a close. Earlier today, Pembroke Field was filled with immense pride, joy, and well-earned celebration as Dean of the Graduate School David P. Lindstrom presided over the formal conferral of the largest cohort of Doctor of Philosophy degrees ever at Brown. From the historic University Procession to the final notes of the Alma Mater, it was an unforgettable morning honoring the pinnacle of academic achievement at Brown.

The ceremony also celebrated exceptional excellence, featuring a moving student address by Melanie Ortiz Alvarez de la Campa, and honoring the distinguished recipients of the Horace Mann Medal and the Joukowsky Prize. A massive thank you goes out to the family, friends, faculty, and mentors who filled the tent today to cheer on our graduates, as your unwavering support made today’s triumphs possible.

To our brand-new Ph.D. alumni: You have pushed the boundaries of human knowledge, questioned the status quo, and left an indelible mark on the Brunonian community. The world is immensely lucky to have your minds, your passion, and your expertise. Congratulations, Doctors!

Huge congratulations to Meg Shieh for winning the prestigious Joukowsky Outstanding Dissertation Award in the physical sciences!

Meg, who receives her doctoral degree in chemistry this May, is being recognized for her groundbreaking dissertation: “Chemical Tool Development for Elucidating the Mechanistic Roles of Sulfane Sulfur in Redox Signaling.” Her research tackles a massive challenge in chemical biology: creating innovative tools to detect, deliver, and understand reactive sulfur species, molecules that are crucial to cellular signaling and human disease, but historically incredibly difficult to measure.

Next up, Meg is headed to Bethesda, Maryland this July to begin her role as an NIH IRTA Postdoctoral Fellow. We can't wait to see how she continues to shape the future of medicine and chemical biology!

Huge congratulations to Sarah Christensen, recipient of the Joukowsky Outstanding Dissertation Prize in the Social Sciences!

Her groundbreaking dissertation, Intimate Histories of Enslaved Women in Early Medieval Europe, 400–1200, challenges how we look at historical evidence by recovering the voices of women and girls systematically erased from the archives.

By reading between the lines of Norse sagas, Arabic traveler accounts, and Byzantine texts, and pairing medieval studies with Black feminist scholarship, Sarah brings the lived experiences, trauma, and resilience of these overlooked women to light.

Sarah completed her Ph.D. at Brown University and is currently inspiring the next generation of scholars as a Lecturer in the Writing Program at Princeton University.

Huge congratulations to Gray Babbs for being awarded the Joukowsky Outstanding Dissertation Prize!

Gray’s groundbreaking research, “Examining Disparities in Quality of Chronic Disease Care among Transgender and Cisgender Medicare Beneficiaries,” is the first large-scale national analysis of its kind. His work doesn't just highlight the inequities within our healthcare system, it provides a roadmap to fix them.

By analyzing Medicare data, Gray discovered that transgender beneficiaries often face chronic conditions earlier in life and receive lower-quality care. However, his research also found a key "modifiable" factor: provider experience. When clinicians have more experience treating transgender patients, outcomes significantly improve.

Experts are calling Gray’s work "groundbreaking" and "methodologically rigorous," setting a new gold standard for how we use administrative data to study health equity.

Huge congratulations to Semilore Sobande, the 2026 winner of Brown University’s prestigious Joukowsky Outstanding Dissertation Prize in the humanities!

Her award-winning dissertation, Ghostwriters: Blackness, Gender, and Nostalgia in 20th Century Transatlantic Fiction, uncovers a powerful truth: Black women are the hidden "narrative architects" of 20th-century literature. By examining works ranging from William Faulkner to Toni Morrison, Semilore demonstrates how Black womanhood acts as the "seam" of the novel—often invisible, yet essential to holding the entire story together.

As her advisors note, this isn't just a dissertation—it’s a project that reshapes how we understand the construction of modern stories.

Join us in celebrating this incredible achievement! We can't wait to see how Semilore continues to innovate the literary world.

At Northwestern University, Dr. Espinosa serves as the Walter P. Murphy Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Director of the Institute for Cellular Engineering Technologies. His research is defining the future of technology and health by pairing artificial intelligence with nanomechanics. This work is accelerating the design of smart materials for sustainable energy and creating revolutionary tools for single-cell gene editing and drug development.

Beyond his technical impact, Dr. Espinosa is a dedicated champion for diversity who works tirelessly to mentor the next generation of underrepresented voices in STEM.

📍 Save the Date: Join us for his award forum, "A Journey Across Scales," on Saturday, May 23 at 12:30 PM in Macmillan Hall 115!
