Design for America - RISD/Brown

Design for America - RISD/Brown The RISD/Brown Design for America Studio is student-run organization using interdisciplinary collaboration to create social impact.

The RISD/Brown Design for America Studio was started in 2011 as a result of students looking for tangible ways to apply their education to solving problems in their community. Thanks to the academic talents of Brown University students coupled with the creativity and ingenuity of Rhode Island School of Design students, the RISD/Brown DFA Studio features superpower teams of students studying everyt

hing from political science to graphic design to mechanical engineering, and has worked collaboratively to tackle issues such as childhood lead poisoning, dyslexia, and healthy food access. In their upcoming year, they aim to continue to identify opportunities to apply their collaborative design thinking skills, actively engage and work with the Providence community, and grow the Design for America family on both campuses.

This past fall our team tackled the question of how can we design a product that college-aged women access and use often for personal safety and wellbeing? With this project we aimed to raise awareness about personal safety for college-aged women and create a brand that can encourage more everyday use of personal safety devices. We surveyed our audience and found that pepper spray and other safety devices were seen as limited to extreme emergencies, but what about more common occurrences? That’s why we designed the Loop for the situations when your phone dies when you’re walking home, at a party, on a first date, going for a run, traveling and you want to communicate discretely with your contacts about your current situation.

Last semester, the remote interaction during quarantine team developed a platform aimed at increasing engagement and social interaction among children through online learning. Our team found new ways to integrate one-on-one interaction and small group interaction for students during class time through the platform to ensure that kids are engaged in online learning and continuing to socially develop during the recent pandemic. These slides highlight the various features of the platform, named the “zoomiverse”, such as auditorium seating, character development, and a new background that encourages engagement through a fun interactive environment.
