Science, Technology, and Society at Brown University

Science, Technology, and Society at Brown University Students and scholars in the field of science and technology studies want to know how scientific knowledge is produced.

We believe that the idealized accounts of knowledge production entrenched in our scientific belief system are inadequate, given the complexity of the process they claim to describe. STS scholars seek to understand how science operates by analyzing historical case studies, observing contemporary scientists at work, examining representations of scientific ideas in textbooks or journals, and studying

the infrastructure of scientific institutions. This interdisciplinary field brings together anthropologists, philosophers, historians, art historians, literary theorists, sociologists and practicing scientists and technologists.

The Risks of Developing Mirror Life: And Initial Thinking on How to Prevent Them

October 16, 2025 | 3:30pm | Friedman Hall 102

Abstract: In 2024, scientists warned of the unprecedented risks of “mirror bacteria”, synthetic bacteria in which all biomolecules have reversed chirality. Since the publication, many have agreed that mirror life should not be created, and a key question is now "how can we ensure that mirror life cannot be created"? This talk will discuss the risks of mirror life and ongoing efforts to determine how they can be mitigated.

Speakers:

Dr Wilmot James, an internationally recognized thought leader in biosecurity, global health, and pandemic preparedness, is a Senior Advisor to the Pandemic Center and a Professor of the Practice of Health Services, Policy and Practice at Brown University.

Dr James Smith is faculty at the J. Craig Venter Institute and the Deputy Director at the Mirror Biology Dialogues Fund. He focuses on biological risks from new and future technologies.
