We, as the Zeta Theta chapter of Alpha Chi Omega, write today to express our deep sadness and solidarity in the wake of the murder of George Floyd at the hands of a police officer whose oath was to protect and serve. As we continue to learn and grow as individuals and as a community, we do so on land funded and built by the kidnapping, forced labor, and death of black bodies. It is not enough to only acknowledge these bodies without addressing their continuous murder in the present day. On and off our campus, people live in fear of the vitriol, hatred, and violence of racism.

The organization of Alpha Chi Omega is comprised of “Real Strong Womxn. We are sisters, leaders, and champions for change.” We work actively to prevent domestic violence and sexual assault, assist survivors, and raise awareness for these causes. We will not continue this work of preventing domestic violence without acknowledging the black bodies who face this same violence in their homes; in their communities. We will work towards centering our philanthropy surrounding domestic violence and sexual assault awareness more around marginalized communities that these issues disproportionately affect. We will actively pursue anti-racist initiatives in our house and on-campus at large, such as increasing education and advocacy for issues within our philanthropy that disproportionately affect black womxn, implementing continuous implicit bias training with our members, and making improvements within our chapter to create a more welcoming and inclusive space for black sisters and black womxn within Brown’s student body. Additionally, we actively encourage other campus organizations, including Greek and Program Housing and other chapters of Alpha Chi Omega, to pledge in solidarity with the actions being taken to combat police brutality.

Lastly, our deepest condolences go out to the family, friends, and loved ones of George Floyd, as well as the community in which he created change. To lose another life in the midst of a pandemic that has disproportionately taken so many black lives and the lives of others who hold marginalized identities is disgusting and unacceptable. Alpha Chi Omega Zeta Theta prides itself on being a diverse and inclusive community that attracts strong womxn and helps them grow together. While our community may only be 100 womxn, it is a necessity to use our platform to champion inclusivity and anti-racism inside and outside Sears House. We hope others join the countless organizations that have worked to combat racism in their communities for centuries. The Zeta Theta chapter of Alpha Chi Omega joins this fight. We hope you will as well.

The sisters of Alpha Chi Omega are dedicated to creating an environment where every person feels safe and respected. Our support for individuals who have experienced violations of their consent is, and always will be, resolute.

Alpha Chi Omega has a long history of supporting survivors and educating others about sexual assault resources and prevention through our philanthropic efforts to increase domestic violence awareness and raise money to support survivors. The Positive Change Campaign is an extension of our work and a necessary step to ending DV. Our goal as a sorority is to make sure every person on Brown’s campus, and beyond, has social and interpersonal interactions that are filled with active choice, respect, and individual bodily autonomy.

On October 1st we kicked off Domestic Violence Awareness Month with the lighting of luminaries on Wriston Quad.

We hope the coming month will serve as a platform for campus-wide discussions about domestic violence and how we as a community can prevent it.

So proud of our sister, Tiffany Chen, for being named a Women Techmakers Scholar through Google's Women Techmakers Scholars Program!

Tiffany Chen Has Been Named A Women Techmakers Scholar

Brown University's Department of Computer Science (Brown CS) has made it our mission to create and sustain a diverse and inclusive environment in which all students, faculty, and staff can thrive. Few things are more meaningful than to see our female-identifying students become known leaders and role models in the field, and Brown CS undergraduate Tiffany Chen has just received significant recognition: she's been named a Women Techmakers Scholar. The award is part of a Google program that aims at furthering Anita Borg’s vision of creating gender equality in the field of computer science.

"My parents mock that I chose Brown because of the lampposts (with the outlets in the bottom). It's true that I did, but to me it's more than that. I was fascinated with how Brown took something that's functional on its own, but added a little twist to it that makes it all the better. And this twist on the otherwise common is not limited to just the lampposts, but is reflected in every detail of Brown's identity. For one, the University listened to students' ideas and redesigned an already prolific and respected curriculum into an open curriculum that allows each individual to pave their unique path to a degree. Brown admits students who are already incredible academics, but introduces them to freedom of study and a myriad of personal benefits that can come from having a choice.

At first I was afraid of the freedom. Any taste of liberation is terrifying at the start, but essential to get to the next beginning. I started my time at Brown wanting to become a Biomedical Engineer, but fell in love with my Music and Arts classes. Exploring Art has always been something that I've engaged with, but I didn't see myself making it more than an extracurricular.

Next year I will graduate with a degree in Modern Culture and Media, with recognition that the privilege of choosing my education has likely positioned me in a direction that will be more fulfilling and true to my interests. When I applied to college, I thought that it was important to know exactly who I am and to be able to convey my "brand" to anyone who meets me. Going into my senior year, I have learned that you may never know completely who you are. To have a "brand" is to limit yourself, what you can accomplish, and the details of your character. Brown has added a twist to my perception of the world that has revealed doors I likely wouldn't have noticed three years ago. Most times it's the details that make all the difference."

is a new series from Brown Undergraduate Admission that highlights the different ways current students answer the question, "Why Brown?"⠀
