While we are working to stop sexual harassment and assault in the future, it’s important to remember & and help those that have already gone through this pain. Supporting survivors of assault and harassment looks different for everyone - every person needs something different. Here are some things to keep in mind that will make sure you’re not overstepping, or putting your loved one in more danger.

Sometimes, being an ally and directly interfering with a situation don’t have to overlap. If you see a situation where you suspect sexual assault might occur (or be occurring), there are many ways to be a bystander - to attract attention elsewhere to check in with someone. There also may be an opportunity to ask others nearby for support if you’re not comfortable stepping in yourself. Read the slides for more information on how you can help stop sexual assault when you see it happening.

We all want to protect our loved ones, and our community as a whole, from sexual assault, but sometimes it's hard to know what to look out for. There are certain behaviors that those who have experienced assault or harassment may show. These slides contain some of those warning signs that may spark a conversation or a check-in. Remember that these signs may be a result of something else occurring in someone's life! It's always a positive thing to check in and offer support, no matter the situation.

The first step to preventing sexual assault and harassment is understanding what sort of behaviors/situations lead to these actions! If you learn anything from this month of awareness, let it be that it is NEVER the victim's fault in a situation of assault or harassment. Don't let society lead you to believe that the victim will ever be at fault. Check the slides for other influences that lead to sexual assault.

Finishing up the month, we focus on the beginnings of our very own Johnson & Wales University, Gertrude Johnson and Mary Wales. This university was started out of their very own home, due to their incredible and deep passions for education. They had firm beliefs that education should the number 1 goal of every young woman and fought to make it a reality for those who couldn’t find it elsewhere. You can find more about them on the JWU website, including the fact that they were a classic example of the iconic “opposites attract” trope that I’m sure applies to many of us and our best friends!

Amelia Earhart is a name just about everyone knows, but did you know that she used to work as a telephone operator, tutor, and social work all before she became the first woman to fly across the Atlantic solo? Or that she supposedly inspired Eleanor Roosevelt to sign up for flying lessons herself? Or that she took flying lessons from Mary Anita “Neta” Snook, who was the first woman to run her own aviation business? There is so much more to her than we so often learn about, and people are still coming up with theories for her disappearance to this day! What are some theories that you’ve heard?

We’re halfway through March, but that doesn’t mean that our highlights are getting any less important! If you need a role model for a hard-working female, look no further than Minnie Spotted-Wolf, the first Native American woman to enlist in the U.S. Marine Corps. She was a member of the Blackfoot tribe, a tribe composed of three separate communities who lived in, what is now considered, the state of Montana. She was a machinery operator and driver for military officers, and even after she was discharged she spent almost 30 years as an educator. She was quoted as saying that boot camp was “hard, but not that hard,” which tells you just a little about how tough she was!

As the weather gets warmer, we want to do our part to help keep our community healthy so that everyone can enjoy the sunshine! To do so, we partnered with APRI to provide free HIV & Hepatitis C testing for all students, faculty, and staff on campus. Registration is not necessary, so please feel free to walk in at any point on Monday, March 28 1-3pm.

While we recommend that you not eat or drink anything for at least half an hour before getting tested, we will provide snacks for those who want them after the test. Results will be available for you in just 20 minutes! For more information, feel free to reach out to us!
