Please Share: Assistant Professor in Theology, area open (beginning Fall 2026):

The Providence College Theology Department invites applications for a full-time tenure-track assistant-professor position in Theology with the area of specialization open. Strong candidates should be deeply rooted in the Catholic theological tradition, should be prepared to teach core courses in theology, and should be able to teach theology in such a way as to facilitate an encounter with Jesus Christ who gives life a new horizon and a decisive direction.

Successful candidates will also demonstrate a commitment to and competence for teaching in the Providence College team-taught interdisciplinary Development of Western Civilization program. Candidates should be aware there could be a opportunity to teach on occasion in the Department’s graduate program.

Tenure-track faculty appointments at Providence College offer competitive salaries and full benefits. Additionally, the College provides reimbursement of relocation costs, and financial support for faculty development. Faculty may also apply for a semester-long paid sabbatical to support their scholarship before tenure. The standard teaching load is 9 credits, and most classes have 15-23 students enrolled.

The positions start Fall 2026. A successful candidate will have an earned doctorate in any area of Catholic Theology no later than the start of the fall semester.

Application materials must be submitted electronically to https://careers.providence.edu by September 19, 2025. In that application you will designate three people from whom letters of recommendation will be automatically solicited by the application portal; these letters of recommendation will be due by October 3. Note that those requests for letters of recommendation will not be sent out until your application is complete and finally submitted through the portal; you may wish to notify your recommenders in advance of the timeline of the automated requests they will receive and the date the letter would be due.

In addition to a robust record of teaching and research, the successful candidate will be committed to Providence College’s quest to build a community informed by justice, inclusion, and charity. Semifinalists for this search will submit a response to the College’s Mission Statement (https://about.providence.edu/mission/) in early October 2025.

For additional information and for documents pertaining to the response to the Mission Statement, please contact: Robert Barry, Search Committee Chair, Theology Department, Providence College, Providence, RI 02918-0001 or [email protected].

Spring 2020 classes begin... now!

St. Thomas frequently recited this prayer before he dictated, wrote, or preached:

Ineffable Creator
Who, from the treasures of Your wisdom,
have established three hierarchies of angels,
have arrayed them in marvelous order
above the fiery heavens,
and have marshaled the regions
of the universe with such artful skill,

You are proclaimed
the true font of light and wisdom,
and the primal origin
raised high beyond all things.

Pour forth a ray of Your brightness
into the darkened places of my mind;
disperse from my soul
the twofold darkness
into which I was born:
sin and ignorance.

You make eloquent the tongues of infants.
Refine my speech
and pour forth upon my lips
the goodness of Your blessing.

Grant to me
keenness of mind,
capacity to remember,
skill in learning,
subtlety to interpret,
and eloquence in speech.

May You
guide the beginning of my work,
direct its progress,
and bring it to completion.

You Who are true God and true Man,
Who live and reign, world without end.

Amen
