Serena Booth Receives An NSF CAREER Award For Inferring AI Specifications By Modeling Humans

“Artificial intelligence (AI) systems,” writes Brown CS faculty member Serena Booth, “increasingly influence both high stakes and everyday decisions across many sectors of the economy. However, providing clear and reliable instructions for intelligent systems is difficult even for relatively narrow applications. Failures occur because instructions are created by people, and human reasoning is shaped by limited information, context, and common cognitive mistakes. As AI becomes more widespread, improving how systems interpret human intent will be essential for safety and reliability.”

To address that challenge, she’s just received a National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Award to study how people communicate goals to machines and design AI systems that can interpret imperfect instructions by reasoning about the intent behind them.

Brown CS Alum Ed Lazowska Receives University Of Washington's Distinguished Teaching Legacy Award

The University of Washington (UW)’s Distinguished Teaching Legacy Award celebrates a legacy of transformational teaching, honoring UW faculty, living or not, who inspired and influenced their students long after they left the classroom. In order to measure impact rather than simply popularity, nominations are solicited only from alums who graduated more than a decade ago. This year’s winner is Brown CS alum Ed Lazowska, Bill & Melinda Gates Chair Emeritus of UW’s Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science and Engineering. He retired in 2025 after 48 years of teaching.

Michael Littman Has Been Elected To The American Academy Of Arts And Sciences

Founded in 1780, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences is one of the oldest learned societies in the United States, with early members who included Benjamin Franklin and George Washington. Today, it’s an independent research center committed to multidisciplinary, nonpartisan research that engages experts in various fields to provide pragmatic solutions for complex challenges. Last month, Brown CS faculty member Michael Littman, Brown University’s Associate Provost for Artificial Intelligence, received one of his profession’s highest honors by being elected an Academy member.

Sorin Istrail Joins A Keynote Panel In Memory Of Craig Venter At The Festival Of Genomics, Biodata And AI

Now in its twelfth year, the Festival of Genomics, Biodata and AI is widely considered one of the world’s most prominent life sciences conferences. Its goal is to create a dynamic and truly inclusive gathering of scientists and clinicians, all with a focus on leveraging innovative technologies and rapidly translating research into better outcomes for patients with serious illnesses. At this year’s Boston event, Brown University’s James A. and Julie N. Brown Professor of Computational and Mathematical Sciences and Professor of Computer Science Sorin Istrail will be joining two other thought leaders in the field for a keynote panel in memory of genomics pioneer Craig Venter, Sorin’s colleague and friend.
