CCMB And Brown CS Are Seeking A Tenure-Track Faculty Member In Computational Biology

The Center for Computational Molecular Biology (CCMB) and the Department of Computer Science at Brown University invite applications for a tenure-track faculty member who develops and applies computational approaches to important biological questions. We seek an innovative and accomplished scientist whose research program is motivated by understanding biological systems (including, but not limited to: multi-omics and gene regulatory networks; RNA structure, any aspect of post-transcriptional gene expression (RNA splicing, export, stability, protein expression etc) , and post-transcriptional modifications; the study of sequence variation such as clinical, statistical or population genetics; bioinformatics; and computational neuroscience). Applications proposing research on some aspect of RNA biology will be prioritized given Brown’s recent large-scale investments in the Guiliani RNA Center.

Malte Schwarzkopf Receives DARPA’s Young Faculty Award For Work On Compilers To Facilitate Code Analysis

Code analysis tools are crucial in preventing security vulnerabilities. But they’re difficult to develop and maintain because they must often deeply integrate with compilers, the monolithic programs that turn source code into executables that can run on a computer.

Enter: Malte's work to “catalyze innovation” with compilers, just awarded the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Young Faculty Award (YFA).

Nikos Vasilakis Wins An NSF CAREER Award For Lowering Barriers To Improve Complex Systems

“Software systems are behind almost everything people do today,” says Brown CS faculty member Nikos Vasilakis, “from science and medicine to communication and artificial intelligence. Unfortunately, their vast complexity goes far beyond the understanding of their users, making even small improvements in their performance, security, or reliability feasible only for teams of experts.”

To address this problem, he’s just received a National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Award on transformorphic computing, a fundamentally new approach to automatically and correctly improving widely deployed systems without burdening their users and with strong guarantees about their behavior.

Kathi Fisler Receives The 2026 ICER Lasting Impact Award

In her solo paper, written when Kathi was a faculty member at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, she returns to and makes progress on Soloway’s Rainfall problem, often used to assess student programming skills in introductory courses. Soloway’s original read, “Write a program that will read in integers and output their average. Stop reading when the value 99999 is input.”
