Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World

Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World Brown University's Joukowsky Institute promotes investigation and understanding of archaeology.

The Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World is dedicated to the academic study and public promotion of the archaeology and art of the ancient Mediterranean, Egypt, and the Near East; our principal research interests lie in the complex societies of the pre-modern era. Although the core efforts of the Joukowsky Institute are archaeological in nature and are located within this broa

dly defined zone, close ties with all individuals interested in the ancient world, and with archaeologists of all parts of the globe, are welcome and actively encouraged. Our faculty and students are from a wide range of countries and backgrounds -- and Brown University's fieldwork and research in archaeology and the ancient world reflects and builds on that multiplicity of perspectives. Our goal is to foster an interdisciplinary community of interest in the archaeology of the ancient world, and in the discipline of archaeology more generally. Our mandate is to promote research, fieldwork, teaching, and public outreach, with the Institute’s associated faculty, students, and facilities serving as a hub for this activity. Brown University's undergraduate and graduate programs in Archaeology and the Ancient World are based in the Joukowsky Institute, as are many of the university's archaeology courses. We organize frequent public lectures, conferences, and workshops, as well as exhibits. We regularly host visiting students and faculty members, whose perspectives and experiences enhance our intellectual breadth and connections. Our Postdoctoral Fellowship program, in particular, is known internationally. A core aspect of our mission is outreach to the Rhode Island community. We are one of the founders of Think Like an Archaeologist, a program for 6th graders. We have a very active fieldwork profile, with projects in Egypt, France, Greece, Guatemala, Italy, Jordan, Sudan, Turkey, the US, and West Indies.

Our workshop on Woodland Management, Agroforestry, and Arboriculture starts tomorrow morning at 9am! Tomorrow's thematic sessions showcase research across Southwest Asia, East Asia, the Mediterranean, North America, and Mesoamerica, engaging with the deep history of cultivation and management of arboreal plants, investigating how humans make and remake their reciprocal relationship with the environment.

Tomorrow concludes with a keynote lecture at 5pm by Professor Lydie Dussol: "From Charcoal to Culture: Insights into Human–Forest History in the Neotropics".

On Saturday, April 11, we will lead a half-day hands-on practicum introducing methods of wood charcoal identification and analysis -- designed primarily for students but open to all interested participants -- beginning at 9am and concluding at 12:45pm.

The full schedule and details can be found on the workshop's website: go.brown.edu/woodland2026.

The workshop is open to all, but pre-registration is required: https://forms.gle/XRfYz9sncR7BCgrZ6.

Join us tomorrow, April 8th, at 5:30 for a lecture by Kirk Maasch and Daniel H. Sandweiss.

Both professors have been studying El Niño for over 40 years, mainly as it manifested in western South America in the past. They will discuss what El Niño is, what it does on the coast of Peru, how its frequency has changed through time, and how past societies in Peru reacted to El Niño events.

Kirk Maasch is Professor in the School of Earth and Climate Sciences, in the Climate Change Institute at the University of Maine. Daniel H. Sandweiss is Libra Professor of Anthropology and Climate Studies and Interim Director, Climate Change Institute at the University of Maine.

Today, between 3 and 5, stop by our Open Collection Hours! Explore the Joukowsky Institute’s (hidden!) Collection of ancient ceramic vessels, lamps, figurines, lithics, sherds, and more – and see what ways you connect with the past! Free and open to the public. All ages are welcome!

And make it a double feature by coming to Eva Miller's lecture on how the ancient world is used in the American imagination. Dr. Miller's talk begins at 5:30.

If you're not sure what to do while you're waiting for a talk, you might also enjoy our exhibit -- still in progress -- of photos of Egypt, taken by Akshay Amesur, a current student in Brown's medical school.

Come by for one or all of the cool things happening today in RI Hall!
