RISD Interior Architecture Interior Architecture Department at the Rhode Island School of Design It is an acronym for who we are and what we do.

The mission of the Department of Interior Architecture at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) is to provide a unique spatial design education relating to the existing built environment. Our pedagogical philosophy is to establish a clear aesthetic, theoretical and technological framework for the investigation of design interventions in adaptive reuse, in order that graduating students are prop

erly equipped to engage in and disseminate such design practice that recognizes the importance of social and environmental responsibility.

“Intar” stands for Interior Architecture as well as Intervention & Adaptive Reuse. It refers to all things and persons related to the department of 110+ students, approximately 33% undergraduates and 67% graduate students. The students, faculty, staff, studios and facilities are housed at the Center of Integrated Technology building in downtown Providence, RI.

MIX + MATCH: this advanced studio explored lightness and adaptability in exhibition design through traveling exhibitions. From analyzing historical precedents and their construction logic, to developing new display systems through analog + AI workflows, to fabricating 1:1 modules. The final review exhibited the fabricated displays as flexible and reconfigurable spatial platforms.

This interdisciplinary LDAR/INTAR studio explores the interplay of natural and cultural conditions at the scale of region, city and site, while specifically engaging the complexities of a post industrial city neighborhood and its ecological and environmental conditions. The studio focuses on the city of Pawtucket zooming in on the Quality Hill and East Riverview neighborhood. The centerpiece of the studio site, the memorial hospital was opened in 1918, becoming a landmark in Pawtucket, but stands abandoned today. The studio focuses on bringing the site back to life through the use of urban and site specific interventions, bringing together the ideas of adaptive reuse, ecological exploration and urban revitalization.

During yesterday's final review for Physical Computing, Interaction Design, and Kinetic Architecture Advanced Studio, students constructed machines, games, and systems through the lenses of movement and play. Various forms included physical and tactile machinery, media and film, and sculptural installations.

Students featured: Anan Almuqait, Emma Davis, Persis Ratouis, Kinjalk Neupane, Fiona Dai, Jenny Morrill, and Beatriz Santos.
