We don't want to miss the opportunity to congratulate and spotlight one of our Flagship alumni, Ella Baldwin, who was recently accepted to begin a Masters of Science graduate program in Natural Resources and Energy Policy at the Colorado School of Mines. Ella says she was "excited to find a program that could leverage the skills and regional expertise I gained from my MESA degree in a field that has such a profound impact on the trajectory of development in the Middle East and North Africa.” This will continue her preparation for a career in government, public policy and risk management. She is specifically excited to work with Dr. Hussein Amery, a specialist in water politics and policy in the MENA region. Her impressive linguistic and cultural proficiency will doubtless be key to unlocking unique opportunities for study and professional service. We can't wait to see how Ella and our other Flagship students will positively impact the world over the years.

A senior majoring in International Relations, Jonah is one of the students who recently got accepted into the Morocco Capstone program!

He initially studied Arabic just to fulfill the GE language requirement, but developed a deep love for it especially after both participating in the Jordan study abroad and serving an Arabic-speaking mission in San Diego. Using the linguistic skills and cultural knowledge he has been obtaining, he plans to pursue postgraduate studies with the goal of working in Middle Eastern politics.

Hailing from Saratoga Springs, Jonah is one of 5 children in his family. He enjoys cooking and playing volleyball. His dream vacation would be to go to Baghdad and his favorite dessert is dolma, a dish made of stuffed grape leaves. :)

Meet Sarah!

A senior, a Wheatley Scholar, and a Biology/Arabic double major, Sarah recently got accepted into the Morocco Capstone program in Meknes!

Having interest in learning a new language as well as having had experience working with refugees from the Southwest Asia and North Africa (SWANA) region, Sarah decided to learn Arabic in order to improve her communication with those of that area of the world. Her experience with the reputed BYU Arabic program evolved into a love for Arabic. Her goal is to continue improving her Arabic and work with scientists in the SWANA region focusing on both the impacts of climate change and strategies of mitigation.
In her free time she enjoys running, painting, hiking, reading and baking. Her dream vacation would be to go to Jerusalem and her favorite dessert is black licorice ice cream! :)

Meet one of our current Morocco capstone students, Ella!

Although originally from Minnesota, Ella has lived in many countries such as the Philippines, United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Netherlands, and Belgium. After living in Dubai during her junior and senior years of high school, her love for the Middle East and her passion for learning languages prompted her to learn Arabic. She is a senior in Middle East Studies and Arabic. Through the linguistic skills and cultural literacy she is developing while living in Morocco, she will be pursuing further education and employment after she graduates.

She loves exploring, cooking, skiing, camping, and hiking with her husband and her dog Kip. :) Her favorite dessert is Umm Ali, an Egyptian dish akin to bread pudding.

Meet one of our current Morocco capstone students, Dillon!

A senior at BYU, Dillon is double majoring in Arabic and Spanish Translation and minoring in Localization. He found interest in Arabic after his friendship in 5th grade with a boy named Mustafa from Syria, which would later influence his decision to pursue studying Arabic and Middle Eastern culture. He would like to expand his knowledge of Arabic dialects and gain cultural experiences through interactions with both Arabic and Amazighi peoples, where he hopes to eventually reach a superior level in Arabic.

Dillon loves learning languages (Spanish, Arabic, and Farsi so far), playing basketball and football, and flying remote control airplanes. He also enjoys exploring old cities, talking to locals in their native tongue, making friends, eating new yet delicious food and learning about a new culture. His favorite dessert is a cheesy Palestinian dish known as knafeh.
