Kicking off the new semester with a visit to the Spanish Fork wind farm! The Wind Energy Club met with the site manager and learned all about the turbines, power production, and policies that make the wind farm run.

Where should we go next??

WIND. SPIN. WIN.
🏆🎉🥇Collegiate Wind Competition National Champions! 🏆🎉🥇
Proud to say that the BYU Wind Energy Team took 1st place at the CWC in Boulder, Colorado this week! It was an intense competition but our hard work paid off! Thank you to everyone who contributed to this project in Turbine Design, Project Development, and Connection Creation!

It was a pleasure to compete with Rice University, California Polytechnic State University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Johns Hopkins University, California Maritime Academy, Iowa State University, Kansas State University, Pennsylvania State University, University of Massachusetts Lowell, The University of Texas at Dallas, and Virginia Tech! You all made it an exciting, competitive, and collaborative competition!

Special thanks to Made Welding & Fabrication

It’s Wind Wednesday! 🌬️🍃

Setbacks are a part of any project, but sometimes they happen with a literal bang.
This lightning-fast failure took us by surprise but teamwork and creative thinking have allowed the team to recover quickly and improve our wind turbine's design.

What setbacks have you experienced and how did you overcome them? 👀Comment below!

What does it mean when you have a 3 MW Wind Turbine?

That number is the wind turbine’s rated capacity, which means that in the ideal wind conditions for that turbine, it will produce that much power.

What does that mean for me?
Well, wind turbines (on land) on average generate 25% or more of their capacity. So in 1 year it will produce a minimum of (3 MW)*0.25*(365 days)*(24 hours/day) = 6,570 MWh of electricity!

And?
A typical Utah home consumes about 16,000 kWh of electricity in a year, that means that a single 3 MW wind turbine can power over 400 homes for a year!

It’s Wind Wednesday! 🌬️🍃

Utah is a net energy positive state. That means we produce more energy than we use. That is possible in part due to Utah’s renewable energy generation through solar, wind, and hydro plants. The two largest wind farms in Utah (Milford and Monticello) send most of their power to California.💪

Where have you seen renewable energy generation in Utah? 👀

It’s Wind Wednesday! 🌬️🍃

Meet Utah’s three wind farms! Here are some fun facts about them:
The most well known, in Spanish Fork, is actually the smallest of them all.

They have a total rated capacity of 386 MW and in 2022 they produced enough energy to power 22,700 homes for the year! 🏡

Wind power makes up 10% of Utah’s renewable energy generation!
