Congratulations to Camille Brown, the Department of Anthropology's 2025 valedictorian! Camille studied the Kichwa language during her fieldwork in Amazonian Ecuador, and she was recently accepted to the Master's program in anthropology at BYU and will start in the fall.

We are excited to announce that the Utah International Film Festival jury has selected a film by one of our students and faculty for its 2025 festival program. "At the Doorway" is a short experimental ethnographic film about Hmong women who navigate their competing responsibilities as both shamans and mothers / grandmothers, narrated by award winning author Kao Kalia Yang. The film was co-directed by Sarah Sowards Taylor (2023 Department Valedictorian) with Dr. Jacob Hickman (Assoc. Prof. of Anthropology) as an Executive Producer, in collaboration with a team of faculty and student co-directors and co-producers from the Theater and Media Arts Department here at BYU.

The short film screening block is today at 1:00pm at the Experience Events Center in Provo, and tickets can be purchased here: https://app.entertainmentoxygen.com/festivals/0007082918981847097/events/0dedad09-8baf-49de-ac20-054d0d5b06d3

What is field school? Students have the opportunity to work with a professor to do their own ethnographic research. After their research is complete, students work on their thesis that they defend in order to graduate with their Bachelor Degree. We have been to amazing places such as: Jordan, Morocco, Japan, Ecuador, Korea, Thailand, China, Utah, and more! This upcoming year (2025) we have a lot of exciting places we are headed! In the winter, we have a local field school option in Provo, and Morocco. In the spring and summer we will be headed to Hawaii, Alaska, and Korea! Keep an eye out for more info on each of these field schools!
