A new statement issued today by the AAUP’s Committee A on Academic Freedom and Tenure advises faculty, staff, students, and administrators to “remain clear eyed about the need to refuse to comply” with the latest attempt by the Trump administration to assert authoritarian control over American higher education. The statement, Why Academic Freedom Matters Now, reiterates the Association's longstanding position that “academic freedom and shared governance are intertwined and necessary for any college or university to fulfill its public mission.”
