Last year, the Classical Liberal Arts journal ๐ด๐‘™๐‘’๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘’๐‘–๐‘Ž published its launching volume consisting of two issues, "What are the Classical Liberal Arts?" and "Beauty & Order."

This semester, Dr. Favelo and the team are so excited to work on the first issue of volume two! The theme for this semester's issue is ๐‘‡โ„Ž๐‘’ ๐ผ๐‘š๐‘Ž๐‘”๐‘œ ๐ท๐‘’๐‘–. Think humanity, human nature, what does it mean to be human?

Our faculty feature for this semester's issue will be none other than Dr. Zorzi, who is the Assistant Professor of Theology and Philosophy at PHC. He specializes in theological anthropology and early modern thought. Dr. Zorzi holds a Ph.D. in Religious Studies and Political Science from Yale University. He is working with PHC on the ๐ผ๐‘š๐‘Ž๐‘”๐‘œ ๐ท๐‘’๐‘– ๐‘ƒ๐‘Ÿ๐‘œ๐‘—๐‘’๐‘๐‘ก, which is one of PHC's top 10 priorities this year. You can read more about this project here: https://www.phc.edu/news/the-imago-dei.

Alongside Dr. Zorzi, we plan to feature 5-6 essays from students and alumni. So, if you have any essays you think might relate to the theme of ๐‘‡โ„Ž๐‘’ ๐ผ๐‘š๐‘Ž๐‘”๐‘œ ๐ท๐‘’๐‘–, please send them to [email protected].

If you'd like to see ๐ด๐‘™๐‘’๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘’๐‘–๐‘Ž'๐‘  first issue to get a sense of our work, you can visit the link to the digital copy! https://online.fliphtml5.com/nyjjd/uqhn/ =1.

Selected authors will be offered the chance to not only be featured in the journal but also discuss their ideas with current students alongside the issue's featured faculty member at ๐ด๐‘™๐‘’๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘’๐‘–๐‘Ž'๐‘  Symposium event later this semester. (Last year, we video called the alumni authors of our two issues, so distance should not be an issue!) :D

Submission period ends next Friday, ๐’๐ž๐ฉ๐ญ๐ž๐ฆ๐›๐ž๐ซ ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ‘. If you have any questions, feel free to email us!

Aletheia is the Greek word for "truth" used in John 4:16 when Jesus says, "I am the way, the truth, and the life."

02/09/2022

This is the last week that Aletheia is open for submissions from students AND alumni! So make sure to send in your submission before this Friday, 2/11.

The theme is Beauty & Order. This issue's featured faculty member is Dr. Bayer. Dr. Bayer will write on the lessons about God, beauty, and order that we can learn from the Ptolemaic universe.

Send your submissions to [email protected] in Word doc format. You can also send us any questions or ask them to anyone on the team.

Selected authors will be published alongside Dr. Bayer and have the chance to join her on the panel for Aletheia's Symposium later this semester.

We look forwards to reading your submissions!!

Aletheia, the new CLA journal, was blessed with a overwhelmingly positive response to its first publication. We hope to continue this upcoming Spring semester of 2022 and not only publish a second issue but further establish Aletheia for years to come. However, we need your help to do so. Please consider supporting us in this endeavor. Your generosity gives us the opportunity to give back to you and serve the PHC community and beyond through Aletheia. Thank you so much!! You can donate here on our GoFundMe page: https://www.gofundme.com/aletheia-fundraiser?pc=em_dn_contacts_r&rcid=r01-164027326052-1fcc47d58e764976&member=16203033

This past Wednesday, the new CLA journal Aletheia released its very first issue themed โ€œWhat Are the Classical Liberal Arts?โ€ (and ran out of printed copies within 10 minutes!) The on-campus reception has been overwhelmingly positiveโ€”a huge blessing!

Thanks to generous donors, Aletheiaโ€™s first issue is free, and Dr. Favelo and the team are excited to share with you all the digital copy here. (Link pasted below!) Inside, youโ€™ll find an article by Dr. Favelo, a special section with items from nine of our professors, three essays from students, and two from alumni.

If you like what you see here, please consider making a donation to Aletheiaโ€™s fundraiser. We are currently trying to raise funds to not only publish a second issue (and hopefully print more copies!) but further establish Aletheia for years to come. You can donate here on our GoFundMe page: https://www.gofundme.com/f/aletheia-fundraiser?member=15529913&sharetype=teams&utm_campaign=p_na+share-sheet&utm_medium=copy_link&utm_source=customer

Lastly, we pray that you find this first issue a joy to read! It was certainly a joy for the team to work on and put together!

The Department of Classical Liberal Arts at Patrick Henry College is pleased to announce the genesis of a new journal entitled ๐ด๐‘™๐‘’๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘’๐‘–๐‘Ž (Truth, in Greek). ๐ด๐‘™๐‘’๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘’๐‘–๐‘Ž is a bi-yearly undergraduate academic journal that will publish scholarly articles on research in the Classical Liberal Arts. The journal is now accepting submissions from ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ฎ๐๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐ฌ, ๐š๐ฅ๐ฎ๐ฆ๐ง๐ข, ๐š๐ง๐/๐จ๐ซ ๐Ÿ๐š๐œ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ญ๐ฒ to be considered for publication in its maiden-voyage issue this Fall.

The theme of the first issue is, "What are the Classical Liberal Arts?"

Submissions do not have to be newly written works but may come from a past class. The only conditions are that they relate either directly or tangentially to the theme and that they were not written for an exam. Please consider bringing out your scholarly literature, history, philosophy, theology, science, math, etc. papers, writing a short explanation for how it relates to the theme of Classical Liberal Arts, and submitting it for publication to ๐ด๐‘™๐‘’๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘’๐‘–๐‘Ž! We welcome anyone who wants to write new articles for the journal. If you are unsure about your topic or have any questions, feel free to contact any member of our team (Charity Kim, Ana Ronald, Julianne Kidd, Nathan Reiley, and Michael Kolesar).

Send your submissions via email to Charity Kim ([email protected]) by ๐Ž๐œ๐ญ๐จ๐›๐ž๐ซ ๐Ÿ—๐ญ๐ก.

Last night, we held our annual CLA department mixer at Dr. Favelo's farm! It was a lovely evening full of good conversation, an overview of the branches of the CLA department by three of our esteemed professors, and a profile of the three different journals by their chief editors (including the new CLA journal, Aletheia).

Thank you to all who came out!!
