See Twyla Tharp's In The Upper Room alongside George Balanchine's Theme and Variations as a part of Program 3 December 15 - 16 at the Sarasota Opera House.

In The Upper Room is a landmark collaboration between world-class choreographer Twyla Tharp and composer Phillip Glass, both at the very peak of their form. In The Upper Room was an instant hit with audiences and equally acclaimed by critics. Dale Harris (Wall Street Journal 1986) wrote that it “takes possession of our emotions…through our growing awareness of its complex and harmonious structure,” adding that its abstract content eludes description “except in terms of the steps, rhythms, and strategies for deploying space [and] the expressive force of the work.” Other critics noted that despite its exuberant energy, the ballet contains a dense, complex dance vocabulary and structure.

Thanks to its tremendous quality and impact, the ballet is in great demand and has entered the repertoires of over 20 companies internationally between 1992 and 2010.

Connecticut College is introducing Summer@Conn pre-college programs! We are offering residential summer programs to high school students (ages 14-18), led by our incredible faculty and staff throughout the month of July. This is a really wonderful opportunity for high school students to get a taste of college — plus it looks great on college applications and resumes. Students have four different programs to choose from: David Dorfman Dance Intensive, Venture Incubator, Global Focus, and EARTH (Environmental Action through Research, Theory, and Heart).
