⚠️ The world is entering an era of "water bankruptcy" in which water use persistently exceeds replenishment, depleting rivers, aquifers and wetlands beyond recovery.

A new United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment, and Health report warns that many major basins are already living beyond their hydrological means, and this is having global consequences:
🌏 75% of people live in water-insecure countries
🏜️ 3 billion live where water storage is declining or unstable
🚱 4 billion face severe water scarcity at least one month each year

The report calls for an urgent reset of the water agenda:
🛡️ Protect natural water capital before losses become irreversible
🚰 Rebalance water use to match degraded limits
💰 Invest in water-smart agriculture, cities and governance

Dehumanizing language is not just rhetoric. It can make war crimes easier to justify.

Speaking to the UN Security Council during Protection of Civilians Week, ICRC president Mirjana Spoljaric warned that when people are portrayed as less than human, the limits meant to prevent atrocities are weakened - and the enemy is given a green light to do the same.

International humanitarian law exists to preserve limits in war and protect our shared humanity.

In armed conflicts, access to food is often disrupted, leaving millions facing hunger. Crops, livestock, and water sources are destroyed, and food aid struggles to reach those in need.

Access to food should not be a luxury.
