We made it. We have the sore feet and documents to prove it. šŸ˜‰ St. Jean to Santiago. 779km. 34 days. 34 different beds slept in. Numerous friends made from around the world.

We slowed down our pace into Santiago to help a fellow pilgrim who was really struggling. It was an appropriate way to finish and great to be a help.

We were given a copy of the ā€œPligrim Beatitudesā€ early on. One of the verses says: ā€œBlessed are you, pilgrim, if you discover that one step back to help another is more valuable than a hundred forward without seeing what is at your side.ā€

Hopefully we have lived this out!

There are a lot emotions today- happy, awe, sad, grief etc. It is going to be weird not to walk tens of kilometers tomorrow! But our bodies need a rest week! That same beatitudes poem says, ā€œBlessed are you, pilgrim, because you have discovered that the authentic Camino begins when it is completed.ā€ If we could live our lives with the same curiosity and care as we experienced with each other on the Camino, the world would be a better place. Now we get to live into that more!

Buen Camino!

20km left after we arrived to O Pedrouzo. We met up with a couple that goes to a Nazarene Church in Oklahoma. We also caught up with a pilgrim we met in our very first night after walking-May 14. We hadn’t seen him since Pamplona. Today as we walked we reflected on what we have been learning, what we are glad to leave behind and what we will be taking away from this remarkable journey. Tomorrow, Santiago. We remembered the six others who started with us- Paulin, Sarah, Amaris, Kamden, McKayla, and Richie.

The moon kept us company. We walked in the dark and watched the moon set. We didn’t see other pilgrims until after 7am. We started around 5:15am.

Castromayor to Melide was about 19 miles. We had a great morning start with a couple of coffee con leche stops. Julene walked ahead to catch up with Kansas City Nazarene friends. It is quite remarkable that I could walk in the same stage as people I know! Cort and Karen are walking with the I’ll Push You/ Accessible Camino trip. I had heard Patrick and Justin’s story in an NNU chapel. It was fun to meet them on the Camino. They had a group of 30ish people accompaning people who do life from a wheelchair. You can surely look at the I’ll Push You FB page for pictures from today. What a day! You just never know who you will meet on the Camino!

Triacastela to Viele (past Sarria) 24km-ish - A thunder storm greatest is at our 6:30am start time, Julene started out behind everyone but ended up reaching the destination first, Key and Liv got lost and received a ride back to the Camino, Bri forgot a trekking pole and walked back 30 minutes to find it, we played in a pool!!

Viele to Castriomayor 28km- We started at 6:15am. Today we made it to the 100km mark! We spent a lot of time at a Cafe with fellow pilgrims so that we could all walk to the 100km mark to get a picture. It is quite the milestone on this journey-quite literally! (Kilometer stone doesn’t sound right) We only have three more walking days! Awe-mazing!

It was a 23km walk from Laguna to Triacastela. We all walked! Yeah for a dirt trail. The pictures of the day can’t do justice to the beauty. Everyday seems to give great encounters with people. Julene spent the afternoon talking with a Christian from the States. While the Camino is a originally a Christian pilgrimage so many people we meet are not Christian. It is great to meet others who are seeking God.

One of the most surprising encounters happened a week a go on the day we walked out of Leon. Bri had her ENC soccer shirt on. A lady asked if that was Eastern Nazarene College in Quincy. It turns out she attended ENc for two years. Today we met up with Cheryl at our second breakfast stop. We all talked with her and found we know quite a few people in common. Tonight she treated us to dinner! We enjoyed a wonderful conversation which included thoughtful questions about what we are all learning through this experience.

Villafranca to Laguna had more than 8 miles of walking on concrete which was not what Julene’s feet and shins could handle. Yesterday was easy and today …. not so much. Julene took a taxi to the final destination after 8 miles out of an abundance of caution. The group only has 6 more walking days and Julene clearly needed rest. The others walked the whole way. They had hoped to find a meal in La Faba and when they only saw one Alburque they feared they would not find what they needed. they found a smaller village than expected. They only had a 3km left to walk but it would be uphill. The one open restaurant was new and started by a former pilgrim. He didn’t have a menu but asked what food they liked and didn’t like. He surprised them with a wonderful 3 course meal. The ladies said that it was like he knew what they wanted. The ā€œCaminoā€ provides. šŸ˜‰ When they arrived in Laguna they were glistening and ready to collapse in bed.

Ponferreda to Villafranca. It was a 15 mile walk today. It was surprising how ā€œeasyā€ it felt. I’m a few places people sold cherries on the path. Julene was gifted cherries when she didn’t have the proper change. Julene and the other ladies walked at different paces today. We all made fun connections with people along the way. Villafranca had a creek which made for a great cold foot soak at the end of the day.

El Acebo to Ponferreda was only 10 miles. Bri and I enjoyed having two more walking partners today. Olivia had her first day of walking the Camino. It is fun to have someone with us who is giddy about being at the start of her journey. Key after a week of resting an injury also got to walk today. We missed her company on the Meseta! It rained today and we finally got to use our ponchos! Today we enjoyed the conversations and the lush mountains. The church was open after lunch and provided a quite respite after walking. We are all so tired for different reasons, sore bodies and jet lag - that we are in bed at 8pm. Like many days on this journey we are more grateful than tired. We have 8 more walking days until this journey ends!

The highest point on the Camino allows for a grand view of Ponferreda.
