When she’s not in class, Sarver enjoys traveling and spending time with her family. She says her favorite thing about Radford University is "how it feels like home – small area and everyone makes everybody feel like family.

May is Better Hearing and Speech Month - a time to raise awareness about communication health and the life-changing impact of early access to care.

This year’s theme, “Access Changes Everything,” reminds us that when people can connect with speech, language, and hearing services sooner, they experience better health, stronger relationships, and greater success in school and work.

Join us in recognizing the importance of communication and the power of access to make it possible for everyone.

🌟 Student Spotlight: Madeleine 🌟

We are thrilled to share that one of our first-years, Madeleine Brooks, has been selected for the Vanderbilt Voice Center’s highly competitive 12-week externship in speech-language pathology! This immersive experience takes place in a leading academic medical center and offers intensive, hands-on training in the evaluation and treatment of complex voice and upper airway disorders.

Madeleine will work closely with specialized speech-language pathologists and fellowship-trained laryngologists, gaining advanced clinical experience through collaborative, interdisciplinary care.

We are so proud of her and excited for all she will learn and accomplish during this incredible opportunity.

Happy Administrative Professionals Day! 🌸

Today we recognize and celebrate the incredible work of two individuals who are essential to the daily success of our department and clinic—Mrs. Anne Spangler and Mrs. Holly Neal Whorley.

Their organization, dedication, and behind-the-scenes efforts keep everything running smoothly, supporting both our students and faculty in countless ways. From managing the details to solving problems before they arise, their contributions do not go unnoticed.

We are truly grateful for all that they do each and every day. Please join us in thanking Anne and Holly for their hard work and commitment!

We’re proud to celebrate three of our outstanding seniors—Payton Rice (faculty mentor: Dr. Diane Millar), Evie Gee (faculty mentor: Dr. Michelle Lenhart), and Natalie Jones (faculty mentor: Dr. Corey Cassidy) on the successful completion and presentation of their Honors Capstone Projects at the Radford University Student Research Conference.

Each of these students were involved in a year-long, in-depth research experience that culminated in the presentation of a final project. Through this process, these students developed skills in inquiry, analysis, and professional communication - preparing them to stand out as strong candidates for graduate programs and professional roles.

Congratulations to Peyton, Evie, and Natalie on this impressive accomplishment!

Our first-year graduate students recently participated in our annual Empathy Lab—an interactive experience that encourages deeper insight into the lived experiences of individuals with communication, hearing, and physical differences.

By engaging in a range of simulated, everyday scenarios, students explored how these challenges can influence routine interactions and activities. This hands-on learning opportunity helps foster perspective-taking, supports the development of compassionate, patient-centered care, and reinforces the importance of truly meeting individuals where they are in their journeys.

🎨 Craft & Connect

Students from Communication Sciences and Disorders and Social Work came together for an afternoon of creativity, conversation, and community at our first-ever Craft & Connect event!

Hosted in Waldron Hall, the event brought students together over button making, snacks, and shared space - creating opportunities to build connections across programs in a relaxed, welcoming environment.

This event was sponsored by Realizing Inclusive Student Excellence (RISE), an initiative dedicated to supporting student success and fostering a strong sense of belonging at Radford University. Through collaborative efforts like this, RISE continues to promote inclusive communities where students feel comfortable being themselves and supported in their academic journeys.

We’re excited to continue creating spaces that bring students together across disciplines!
