August has officially hatched! ๐Ÿฃ๐Ÿฅš

Throughout National Emergency Management Awareness Month, weโ€™ve been cracking into what emergency management is, why it matters, and how awareness helps build a safer, more prepared Highlander community.

But weโ€™re not putting all our eggs in one basket. ๐Ÿ˜‰

With September right around the corner, weโ€™re cracking open National Preparedness Month! Awareness may have hatched, but now itโ€™s time to take what we know and turn it into action.

๐Ÿฅš Crack open a preparedness plan.
๐Ÿฃ Hatch some good emergency habits.
๐Ÿฅš Get your supplies together.
๐Ÿฎ And keep building your Radford Ready mindset.

One month hatched, another cracked open, letโ€™s get cracking on preparedness!

Today is a bittersweet day as we say goodbye to Taylor on her last day with Radford University Emergency Management.

Taylor has been an important part of our team and has contributed to so much of the work that happens both behind the scenes and across campus. From emergency preparedness and planning to outreach, training, and supporting our campus community, she has helped move our program forward and made a lasting impact along the way.

While weโ€™re certainly going to miss having her as part of the team, weโ€™re excited for her as she begins her next chapter.

And if you happen to be at the Fall Club Fair on main campus today, stop by and see Taylor in person to wish her well and say goodbye!

Thank you, Taylor, for everything youโ€™ve brought to our office and the Radford community. We wish you nothing but the best in what comes next! โค๏ธ๐Ÿ’™

Preparedness starts with knowing what to do.

This National Emergency Management Awareness Month, we're sharing simple safety tips to help our campus community build the knowledge, understanding, and confidence to make safe decisions before and during emergencies.

One of the most important flood safety messages you can remember is:

Turn Around, Don't Drown.

Moving water is much more powerful than it appears.

๐Ÿšถ Just 6 inches of fast-moving water can knock an adult off their feet.
๐Ÿš— 12 inches can carry away a small car.
๐Ÿš™ 18โ€“24 inches can sweep away larger vehicles like SUVs and trucks.

Flooded roads can hide strong currents, washed-out pavement, and other hazards that aren't visible from your vehicle. If you come across water covering the road, don't drive through it. Turn around and find another route.

A few extra minutes could save your life.

๐Ÿ’™ Stay informed. Stay prepared. Stay Radford Ready.

Ready Starts with Knowing!

Being prepared starts with understanding the difference between a Watch and a Warning:

Watch = Conditions are favorable. Be prepared and stay informed.
Warning = It's happening or about to happen. Take action now.

It's as simple as baking cookies:
Watch = You have all the ingredients to make cookies
Warning = The cookies are READY to eat ๐Ÿช

This is just the beginning! Throughout National Emergency Management Awareness Month, we'll be exploring different emergency management topics, sharing campus resources, and helping you better understand how we work together to keep the Radford University community informed and resilient. We can't wait to see everyone back on campus soon!

๐Ÿšจ What is Emergency Management?

August is National Emergency Management Awareness Month, and we're excited to share more about the work we do to help keep the Radford University community safe.

Emergency Management is more than responding to emergencies. Our office supports the university through the four phases of emergency management:

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Mitigation โ€“ Helping reduce risks before emergencies happen.
๐Ÿ“‹ Preparedness โ€“ Helping our campus know what to do before an emergency.
๐Ÿšจ Response โ€“ Coordinating response during emergencies.
โค๏ธ Recovery โ€“ Helping our campus recover after an incident.

Throughout the month, we'll be highlighting different aspects of emergency management, introducing the work of our office, spotlighting our team, and sharing resources that help keep our universty informed and resilient!

Whether you're a student, faculty member, or staff member, we're glad you're part of the our community. Follow along all month as we celebrate National Emergency Management Awareness Month, introduce the work of the Office of Emergency Management, and share how Radford Ready helps keep you informed and ready for whatever comes next!

Plan Today. Ready Tomorrow.

Heads up, Highlanders!

We're enjoying some beautiful weather today, and we hope you are too! If you're spending time outdoors or relaxing along the New River, be sure to stay aware of changing river conditions.

This afternoon, Appalachian Power Company will be conducting a test that will temporarily increase downstream flows on the New River. River levels are expected to rise by approximately 2.5 feet and can increase quickly.

Please use caution, stay alert, and avoid areas where rising water could create hazardous conditions.

WATER LEVEL NOTICE

Appalachian Power Company (APCo) will conduct a required test of its generating units at the Claytor Hydroelectric Project in southwest Virginia on Thursday, July 30, 2026.

The test will temporarily increase downstream flows on the New River, with impacts varying by distance from the dam. Areas closest to the dam, including Radford, can expect river levels to rise by approximately 2.5 feet Thursday afternoon. Flows are expected to peak during the afternoon before decreasing throughout the evening.

Recreational and commercial users of the river and shoreline areas should be aware of temporarily higher water levels and faster-moving water. People fishing, boating, swimming or otherwise recreating on the New River should use caution and be prepared for rapidly changing river conditions.

Weather or other operational circumstances could affect the timing.

The twice-yearly testing is required by PJM Interconnection, the regional transmission organization that coordinates the movement of wholesale electricity in the mid-Atlantic region.
