From the Arctic Circle to Princeton labs, senior physics student Athena Smith is proving that curiosity can take you anywhere. ❄️🔬

Athena’s passion for science began in childhood and led her to groundbreaking research opportunities through Radford University’s Alaska Geophysics Program, where she conducted field research on Arctic sea ice in Utqiagvik, Alaska; enduring extreme temperatures, powerful winds, and even the possibility of polar bears nearby.

Her research journey didn’t stop there. Athena also spent summer 2025 conducting research at Princeton University before securing a position with Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) following graduation this May.

“My whole career at Radford has been research-focused,” Athena shared. “I give all the thanks to Radford. I honestly would not want to be anywhere else.”

We are incredibly proud of Athena and all she has accomplished through undergraduate research! 🌎✨

Radford University hosted a dynamic Teach-In on Academic Freedom and the Liberal Arts, featuring Haley Gilley, Therese Root, and Joe Wirgau! 🧠

The session, Education for a Complex World, invited students and faculty to explore how liberal arts learning equips communities to navigate uncertainty, think critically, and engage with complexity in meaningful ways.

The Haley Gilley and Therese Root led a thoughtful conversation on the role of academic freedom, the value of interdisciplinary thinking, and the importance of cultivating spaces where inquiry and dialogue can thrive. 🔥

🌿 Undergraduate Research Team of the Week 🌿

This week, we’re excited to highlight Ecological Dystopian Literature, an interdisciplinary research project bringing together the Biology and English Departments.

Led by Aerowen Bryant alongside Dr. Foltz and Mx. Jackson-Stone, this team explores how literature reflects and reimagines environmental futures; bridging science and storytelling to better understand our world.

Projects like this showcase the power of undergraduate research to connect disciplines, spark critical thinking, and address real-world challenges from new perspectives.
