Templeton Honors College

Templeton Honors College "Great Questions. Great Conversations.” The Templeton Honors College is a Great Books college within Eastern University.

We read and discuss the classic texts from the tradition that emerged from the confluence of Greek, Roman, and Christian Mediterranean cultures. This tradition aims to help orient people to the true, good, beautiful, and holy. We are committed to educating the leaders and servants of tomorrow, providing them with the tools to think well and lead with integrity.

Dr. Ravi Jain, Co-Director of the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) at the Templeton Honors College, will discuss his new book, The Enchanted Cosmos, in Clemens Hall in Templeton Hall.

Dr. Jain completed his doctorate in Philosophical Theology, at Oriel College, Oxford University, with a dissertation titled, “Whose Mathematics, Which World?” He co-authored 'The Liberal Arts Tradition' (also in Chinese and Portuguese) and 'A New Natural Philosophy'. His third book, 'The Enchanted Cosmos: Mathematics and the Logos who is Love' (also in Chinese), reveals how much of popularly held epistemology and metaphysics is transmitted through school mathematics. He has consulted with government and church leaders on education and spoken widely throughout America, Africa, China, and Europe. He learned to row (and punt!) at Oxford, competing for Oriel College in Summer Eights (and the more fun-loving punting cuppers). In his free time he enjoys relaxing with his family and friends, ideally by a fire or with a view of the mountains dropping into the sea.

Dr. Jain will sign copies of his new book during a reception after the lecture.

Light refreshments to be served.

The Templeton Honors College marks this milestone with a feast where we hear students reflect on their first year in this community. This week at Templeton Hall we're rotating our hanging pieces. As we move forward from Lent into the season of Easter our art reflects this shift, embodying the resurrection, new life, and a future filled with hope for the coming generations.

With pieces from Bruce Herman, Ed Knippers, Patrick Pye, Maria Susarenko, and Maxwell Olisedeme we train our eyes as well as our minds, delighting in the resurrection story, the glory of God, and the beauty his creations are capable of.

If you love books, you may enjoy this new podcast Dean Williams recorded with Shilo Brooks, "The Reading Man: Shilo Brooks on Making a Life with Books."

Brooks is President and CEO of the George W. Bush Presidential Center and host of The Free Press’ "Old School" podcast.

Brooks reflects on growing up in West Texas, discovering the great books almost by accident, and attending St. John's College only after a benefactor made it possible. Together they consider why men stop reading, what is lost when they do, and why the best books are not simply objects of study or instruments of advancement, but companions in the long work of formation.

This is a conversation about books as guides for life, about the formation of men, and about the kind of education that moves from the classroom to the soul.
