The NC State veterinary class of 2030 includes the first-ever cohort of students in the Equine Scholars Program.

The highly competitive program selects six undergraduate students and two alternates from partner North Carolina universities who then complete summer internships shadowing equine practitioners. Completing the program’s requirements grants guaranteed admission to the College of Veterinary Medicine.

Less than 4% of veterinary students go into equine medicine, and there is a shortage of equine and large animal practitioners.

“We are really hopeful that the Equine Scholars Program will help to address the need for equine primary care veterinarians in North Carolina,” says Dr. Katie Sheats, associate dean and director of Professional Education and Admissions.

Members of the second cohort — all college seniors and one recent graduate — completed their internships this summer and are on track to join the class of 2031 next fall. The program, created in 2024, is based on NC State’s Food Animal Scholars initiative, which similarly recruits undergraduates with an interest in food animal medicine.

Animal lovers, help us spread the word about our study into how to medically manage non-ambulatory dogs with disc herniation.

Researchers are trying to identify the most appropriate dogs for medical management and to optimize assessment and care through establishing partnerships with local primary care veterinarians. The ultimate goal is to provide clinically relevant evidence allowing for a full spectrum of care recommendations for the management of acute, severe TL-IVDE.

Animal lovers, help us spread the word about our study to identify the underlying cause of gallbladder mucocele formation in Shetland Sheepdogs by studying their genetics.

Participants will need to submit to a collection of DNA through blood (preferred) or a cheek swab. Owners will be asked to fill out some information about your Sheltie.

Our NC State College of Veterinary Medicine faculty, residents and students shared their expertise at the American Association of Bovine Practitioners conference in Minnesota last week, presenting their research and participating in seminars on the national stage!

A few of the highlights:
• Fourth-year student Haley Vaughan presented pharmacology research she worked on with Dr. Danielle Mzyk in collaboration with the Food Animal Residue Avoidance Databank.
• Farm animal resident Dr. Jake Eldridge presented immunology research he conducted with Dr. Lisa Gamsjaeger.
• Fourth-year student Daisy Cagle presented a student case report on dairy calf health and transportation.
• Kourtni Curry, a fourth-year veterinary student, won a $5,000 James H. Bias scholarship.
• Katie Forrest, a fourth-year veterinary student, won a Zoetis scholarship.
• NC State's AABP Quiz Bowl team consisting of third-year students Emma Knox, Hannah Williams, Makenzie Blanchard and Claire Sholar made it to the semifinals in a tournament against 28 teams.

As Dr. Lysa Posner, associate dean of academic and student affairs, explained when the program began in 2024: “As a land-grant school, we have a mission to serve the people of North Carolina and their animals. We recognize we have a population of potential students in North Carolina who don’t see themselves here, and we want to change that.”

This feline study will gauge whether treatment with an investigational product can delay the progression of cardiac disease, reduce the occurrence of cardiac-related morbidity and extend the time to cardiac-related mortality in cats with congestive heart failure.

This is a double-blind, placebo-controlled study of a once-daily oral liquid investigational medication administered by the cat owner, with the goal of achieving approval by FDA.

ALL cats in the study receive Standard of Care based on ACVIM guidelines during the full duration of their study participation, which may help reduce the likelihood of certain disease complications, and all study requirements are provided free to owners, including cardiac and respiratory exams; diagnostic tests, including echocardiogram, electrocardiogram, thoracic radiography and systolic blood pressure; bloodwork, including hematology, biochemistry, total thyroxine, fructosamine, NT-proBNP; and urinalysis.

Whether they grew up in the saddle or have never stepped foot in a barn, some of our first-year veterinary students took to the field to learn and refine important safety techniques with NC State’s equine experts and horses.

Organized by NC State’s Student Chapter of the American Association of Equine Practitioners and led by professionals at our Reedy Creek Equine Farm, this lab taught our students safe practices for approaching and standing around horses, the basics of grooming and leading, and proper technique for picking up a horse’s hoof.

Equine medicine is one of five specialty areas our veterinary students can focus in, and extracurricular events like this are important to help foster interest in large animal medicine — an area with a growing shortage of veterinarians.

NC State is committed to addressing that shortage.

To that end, we’re investing heavily in the future of equine medicine. Our new large animal veterinary center will be a state-of-the-art facility for training the next generation of large animal practitioners and will elevate the world-class care we already provide for the entire region.

No summer slowdown here! Our innovative faculty, staff and students have continued their groundbreaking ways, bringing home scores of awards and grants over the hot weather weeks.

Their achievements have been honored by the American Association of Avian Pathologists, the American Veterinary Medical Association and many more organizations.

Their grants have come from sources including the National Institutes of Health, the North Carolina Translational and Clinical Sciences Institute, Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health, and the North Carolina Biotechnology Center.

Lightning talks, a chance to talk with veterinary experts in 15 specialties and two amazing keynote speakers! Those were just a few of the highlights at the 2026 Veterinary Scholars Symposium, which NC State hosted this month for more than 700 students and faculty members from across the world.

Students in the program spent the summer conducting research under the guidance of faculty mentors and presented their findings at the symposium. More than 40 universities were represented!

A Combined Degree Colloquium with more than 40 dual-degree DVM/Ph.D. students presenting their research preceded the symposium.

“The enthusiasm around NC State during the events was contagious,” said Dr. Joshua Stern, NC State’s associate dean for research and graduate studies.
