Empowering People, Providing Solutions. North Carolina is a state rich in forest resources with almost 60 percent, or 18.3 million acres, of the state covered in forests. The wise use of this resource is important for water and air quality, wildlife habitat, beautiful views, timber resources, and economic prosperity. With 35 million trees produced annually in 80 counties, North Carolina also ranks second in the nation for Christmas tree production.

Fall foliage this year may be patchy, muted, and shorter than usual. A mix of drought, heat, and rainfall conditions could create a "patchwork" of foliage, with some areas showing duller colors or shorter seasons.
Western NC has a higher chance of seeing vibrant fall foliage compared to the Piedmont and Coastal Plain. But don't worry, NC will still offer many places to see the hues of fall colors, even if conditions vary across the state.

As we go into the long Labor Day weekend, we wanted to share a few safety reminders! If you're headed into the woods, burning, or doing outdoor recreation this weekend, keep in mind these few tips:
🔥 Monitor and fully extinguish fires; conditions change quickly, do your part!
🪵 Burn local or treated firewood. Remember, don't move firewood to prevent the spread of pests.
🏞 Know before you go. Check trail or forest conditions before your trip.
💧 Heat safety! Stay hydrated, find shade, and take breaks in high temperatures.

Spotted lanternfly (SLF) egg-laying begins mid-September and continues until late fall (around mid-November), with eggs present until March!
You can destroy egg masses before they hatch to reduce the number of SLF the following year.
One cost-effective, non-chemical trap is the lampshade trap! This trap uses asphalt shingles in the shape of a lampshade, making it an attractive spot for egg-laying, while the height and materials make masses easy to remove and destroy.
