Healthy communities start with creating healthier choices — and making those choices easier to access. 🌱🍎

Through Healthy ROOTS, AHS faculty and staff are working alongside Extension and community partners to improve access to nutritious foods, physical activity and healthy learning environments in rural North Carolina communities. From produce prescription programs and mobile markets to school gardens and walkability initiatives, the program is helping remove barriers to healthier living.

What can an education in agricultural education lead to? For NC State alumnus Marshall Stewart, the answer is university president.

Stewart earned three degrees from NC State and went on to build a career centered around agricultural education, Extension, FFA, 4-H and higher education leadership. Today, he serves as the 16th president of North Dakota State University.

His journey reflects the power of agricultural education to prepare students not only for careers, but also for lives of service and leadership.

What happens when young people get the opportunity to explore a career they’re passionate about? They gain experience, make connections and get a clearer picture of their future.

Through a Union County 4-H internship, rising Parkwood High School senior Avery recently toured Cotton Incorporated, where she explored textile laboratories and learned how research, technology and creativity come together to create and improve fabrics.

The experience strengthened her interest in the textile industry and helped her see the many career paths available in the field.

This is the power of hands-on career exploration. Through N.C. Cooperative Extension, young people can connect with professionals, businesses and opportunities that help turn their interests into meaningful career possibilities.

With support from volunteers, local farmers, faith communities and community partners, the Allen Chapel Food Pantry is expanding access to nutritious food while bringing neighbors together.
