NC State College of Natural Resources

NC State College of Natural Resources We're a world leader in natural resource education and research creating sustainable solutions at the intersection of the built and natural environment.

The College of Natural Resources at North Carolina State University is finding sustainable solutions at the intersection of the built and natural environment. Our award-winning teachers and researchers work alongside students to generate new knowledge and technology, engage with industry and communities, and provide professional leadership for the future. With just over 1400 students, our college

is one of the smallest at NCSU, allowing us to give our students personalized attention with the resources of a larger university. College of Natural Resources’ unique approach to teaching focuses on experiential education in the classroom and beyond. We enrich the learning experience through field trips, internships, service-learning projects and study abroad. Our three departments, Forestry and Environmental Resources, Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management, and Forest Biomaterials are ranked among the nation's best in their fields for both undergraduate and graduate programs.

From the College of Natural Resources to Smurfit Westrock, Antonio Suárez Simancas '22 is transforming his passion for sustainable materials into real-world impact.

As a lead R&D scientist, he develops models that help paper mills improve efficiency, reduce costs and advance sustainability efforts across the industry.

"I am fascinated by the process of making paper; it is almost perfect. Knowing I wanted to pursue a graduate degree in this field, the Ph.D. in Forest Biomaterials program at NC State was the obvious choice."

Meet Dr. Aaron Hipp, professor of parks, recreation and tourism management in the College of Natural Resources. 👋

In fall 2015, he joined NC State after teaching as a public health assistant professor at Washington University. Hipp’s research has focused on nature and health; greenspaces, parks, and health; nature and park prescriptions for wellness; access to outdoor sport and health; active living; and more.

Currently, Hipp is the first director of NC State's new Nature and Health Collaborative, which is supported by the Global One Health Academy. The collaborative works to strengthen the growing body of research, education and engagement the NC State community contributes to the intersection of human health and the outdoors.

He is also chair-elect of the National Physical Activity (PA) Plan and will be chair for the 2028-29 year. There, he helps with the implementation plan of the CDC PA guidelines, which look at how organizations, governments, NGOs, schools, YMCAs, etc., help people to be physically active.

“The Nature and Health Collaborative and efforts to bring together people across campus working in the nature and health space have been very important. This includes the creation of the Campus Greenspace Map that has received over 6,000 site visits since it debuted in August 2024.”

The City of Raleigh - Government recently awarded the Next Generation of Environmental Leaders Award to the Environmental Resources Water Assessment Training Program (ERWATP). This innovative program is led by our own Dr. Angela Allen.

“This recognition from the City of Raleigh highlights the powerful link between mentorship and environmental stewardship. My goal is to show NC State students that scientific rigor is a tool for real-world impact, and this honor serves as a wonderful validation of that mission. This award is a testament to the strength of our community partnerships and the dedication of our students. I am humbled to see our high-impact work recognized by the city we serve.” -Dr. Angela Allen, assistant teaching professor in the NC State Department of Forestry & Environmental Resources

In 2024, Dr. Allen was awarded the NC Source Water Protection Award for Education by the NC Source Water Collaborative. In 2025, she was awarded the Sustainability Award for the Faculty Recipient with her work leading the training program. In addition, the ERWATP was selected into the fall 2025 cohort of Packways ABCs to be recognized as a high impact experience and is now a part of the NC State Packways.

Meet Jack DeMola '27, a fourth-year student whose academic journey and hands-on experiences have helped shape his path toward a future in engineering. 🐺 🎓

Through coursework, leadership opportunities and practical learning experiences, Jack has gained valuable technical skills while gaining insight into the impact engineering can have across industries and communities.

"The College of Natural Resources has some of the most experienced professors, who draw on both industry and research backgrounds to teach students how to solve real-world problems. The professors also foster genuine connections with their students; I have discussed job opportunities with many of my professors to better understand which opportunities are the best fit for me, and they can help answer that question because they know me and my career goals."

Congratulations to our very own Dr. Caren Cooper, who has been selected as a recipient of the 2026 Alumni Association Outstanding Research Award and inducted into the NC State Research Leadership Academy. 🎉

Dr. Cooper, a professor in the Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources, created and co-leads the Citizen Science Campus, which has engaged thousands of students in citizen science and supported faculty from multiple colleges in launching new citizen science projects. She has also created a graduate certificate in participatory sciences with two new graduate courses.

“Being selected for this award is an exciting recognition of my commitment to ensure NC State is an interdisciplinary leader in the participatory sciences, within programs across Colleges and Academies. It signals to me that, as part of the Research Leadership Academy, I should continue to build the credibility, stature, and impact of the Citizen Science Campus programs that support other faculty and students in their research, teaching, and leadership in participatory sciences.”

Over the past few years, Dr. Cooper has received several awards to help her further her research. These include awards from the Center for Human Health and Environment, the National Science Foundation, Spencer Foundation and the Environmental Protection Agency.

We’re still reflecting upon the unforgettable memories from NC State University's spring graduation. ❤️🎓

Take a look back at some of the weekend’s highlights, including wonderful speeches from student speaker Tonya Henderson Gatling and Harry Sideris, an NC State alumnus and former member of the Natural Resources Foundation Board. Harry and his wife, Catinna, created the Sideris Family Scholarship in 2021 to support NC State students pursuing a dual major in chemical engineering and paper science and engineering.
