NC State Toxicology

NC State Toxicology The official page of NC State's Toxicology Program. We are located on the University’s technology-based Centennial Campus.

Toxicology is the study of the adverse effects of chemical, physical, or biological agents on people, animals, and the environment. The Toxicology program provides comprehensive course work and research training to prepare prospective toxicologists and environmental health scientists for careers in academia, government, and industry. Based on a strong history and foundation of research funding fro

m the National Institutes of Health, graduate degrees in toxicology were first awarded at NC State University in 1979. Areas of research excellence within the program include elucidating the relationships among cell signaling processes and toxicant/stressor-induced disease and toxicity, establishing mechanisms of system-specific toxicity, using physiological and genomic approaches to understand differences in species and individual susceptibility to environmental contaminants, and unraveling gene-environment interactions. PhD students can elect to concentrate in either General Toxicology, Cell and Molecular Toxicology, or Environmental Toxicology. The Toxicology program continues to define graduate training in toxicology. Graduate Programs leading to masters (MTOX and MS) and doctoral degrees (PhD) provide students the opportunity to pursue study that will prepare them for a range of career paths. PhD students are awarded traineeships through various sources, including an NIEHS training grant on “Molecular Pathways to Pathogenesis in Toxicology” and a US EPA cooperative training agreement. Students are provided a competitive stipend and participate in the Graduate Student Support Plan which covers tuition and health insurance. Graduates of our program are primed for leadership roles in academia, government, and industry. Our alumni are a testament to the program’s success. Please tour our website to gain a full appreciation of the research, academic, and extension activities of the Toxicology program.

Not only did they rep NC State's research cred, but they also proved our program is the ultimate mashup of awesomeness. Pics from CSETAC, Brain Night, and NC State's T32 Symposium.

Second one this month! Ryan Bartone successfully defended his dissertation, "Role of the Allergen Corona in Allergic Lung Disease Exacerbated by Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes." Ryan's major advisor is Dr. Jamie Bonner.

During his tenure, Ryan published numerous papers and received several honors, including the 2024 Toxicology Founders Award. This award funded his travel to Italy to present at the International Nanotox Meeting, and he has further shared his research at both the NC SOT and national SOT conferences.
