This week, we pause to observe Memorial Day, a time to honor and remember the service, sacrifice, and commitment of the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. It is a moment of reflection, gratitude, and respect for the freedoms we enjoy because of them.
At our community college, this day also reinforces our commitment to support veterans and military families as they transition from service to civilian careers. Many veterans bring leadership, discipline, technical experience, and problem-solving skills developed through years of service. What they often need is support translating that experience into civilian language, aligning it to todayโs workforce needs, and identifying where their Military Occupational (MO) Specialty fits across industries.
Career transition does not happen in isolation. It affects families, timelines, finances, and identity. Veterans returning to the classroom may refresh academic skills, pursue new credentials, or redefine a career path altogether. Community colleges play a critical role by providing accessible education, flexible pathways, and career coaching that recognizes both experience and potential.
Our work is not about starting over. It is about building forward. It is about helping veterans articulate their value, connecting skills gained in uniform to meaningful careers, and accessing opportunities without losing momentum. It is also about making sure families feel supported throughout that process.
On this Memorial Day, we honor those we have lost by continuing to show up for those who are here. Supporting veterans is not just a program. It is a commitment.
