Such a good feeling to find in the field, applying skills they have practiced to real-world projects like today’s hosted by the WakeNature Preserves Partnership! The Procter Property is owned by Wake County Parks, Recreation and Open Space and is set to be managed and opened as a public nature preserve. The BioBlitz included experts and enthusiasts from many organizations and representing many fields of nature identification, including botany, ornithology, mammalogy, and as Thomas Reed and Maya Marin are demonstrating, herpetology! The species identified and mapped using GPS tech today will help Wake County PROS create their management plan to best protect at-risk species while highlighting unique features of the property!

We had a lot to celebrate this wonderful Earth Day, not the least of which is our largest, most active EcoVillage community EVER! We took today’s EcoVillage End of Year Celebration and LEAD Awards Ceremony to recognize our Spirit of the EcoVillage, our most active residents and Mentor (in both participation and service), our fabulous EcoVillage Hall Council, our wonderful Village staff, and our LEAD Bronze, Silver, and Gold Award winners! We have so many students to celebrate in the Village this year, and we want to say thank you to everyone that made up our Village community in 2017-2018! It was an amazing year!

16 EcoVillagers spent their morning volunteering for Habitat for Humanity of Wake County yesterday! They helped remove torn screening, rotted wood, and an old stairway from the homeowner’s back porch and began replacing with new framing, screen, and built a new stairway for her! They also re-painted the front step railings.

The purpose of the Ecology of Grandfather Mountain overnight trip is to provide students with a “sense of place” for North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountain Range, part of the southern Appalachian Mountains. Students learned about and experienced several of the unique habitats that belong to part of the mountainous NC bioregion and why they are important. Students also learned about examples of native animal species found in the North Carolina mountains. EcoVillage residents got to travel to a Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation staff member's salamander research site and found examples of some of the native species of salamander that help make North Carolina and the southern Appalachians the salamander capital of the world!

The purpose of the overnight Ecology of Coastal NC trip is to provide students with a “sense of place” for the North Carolina coast. In other words, students will learn about and experience several of the unique habitats that belong to the coastal NC bioregion and why they are important. Students will also learn about the impacts of climate change and sea level rise on coastal ecology, the importance of prescribed burns, and will be able to relate examples of species found on the North Carolina coast.

EcoVillage spent the night on the floor of the NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher after participating in several educational programs like a coastal ecology "Jeopardy," Gyotaku fish printing on t-shirts, and a live animal demonstration of several reptile species. The next day we visited an example of a maritime forest, a coquina rock outcrop, and went on a carnivorous plant hike at Carolina Beach State Park with a Ranger and other park staff.

And here are some pictures from the Coastal Ecology trip we took back in September - we spent the night at the NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher after visiting The Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center, taking a carnivorous plant hike at Carolina Beach State Park, and visiting the coquina rock at Kure Beach, North Carolina.
