Soon-to-be NC State Agricultural Institute graduate Alex Boone is teeing up a successful career in turfgrass management. ⛳️

Boone will graduate this December with a two-year associate degree in turfgrass management from the Agricultural Institute, and he already has a dream job lined up: helping grow in the turf for The Gilroy, a third course under construction at Old Barnwell, a private golf club near Aiken, South Carolina.

“It’s not the long-term commitment that a four-year program is,” said Boone of the Agricultural Institute. “Two years isn’t as big a time commitment as it feels like, and what you can do in those two years at the institute is amazing.”

A rural internship taught animal science major Lauren Schulte-Hock about the business of bison. 🦬

In this episode of The Dean's Den, CALS Dean Garey Fox sits down with Schulte-Hock to discuss her summer internship at Sunset Ridge Bison Ranch in Roxboro, North Carolina.

Through the CALS Rural Works! program, which recruits employers in rural areas to hire summer interns, the owners of Sunset Ridge Bison Ranch brought on Schulte-Hock to assist with evaluating animal health, marketing and managing the daily business.

“Seeing and being part of farm operations brings the classroom studies to life,” said Schulte-Hock. “My courses at CALS definitely prepared me for this experience.”

This cosmic flavor was created by our talented team at the NC State Department of Food, Bioprocessing and Nutrition Sciences in honor of NASA astronaut and three-time NC State graduate Christina Koch.

Howl at the Moon will be available for a limited time at Talley Student Union and the Howling Cow Dairy Education Center and Creamery, while supplies last.

CRISPR pioneer and NC State CALS distinguished professor Rodolphe Barrangou joined NASA astronaut Christina Koch for a panel yesterday about how higher education opens doors for students.

"The Launchpad Effect" brought Koch and Chancellor Kevin Howell together with leading NC State faculty for a conversation that explored what it takes to achieve a big dream, solve a grand challenge or answer a question that has never been asked before — and how NC State, as a land-grant institution, empowers us to Think and Do for the betterment of North Carolina and our world.

“If we want to address the grand challenges that impact planet Earth, we need to innovate, we need to change what we do and how we do it. And we need to do it and make it affordable, we need to make it scalable, we need to make it equitable, we need to make it ethical, so we need to do it well. We have to be innovative to be able to be disruptive enough to address those grand challenges: That’s a must-have, it’s a need, it’s not a want," said Barrangou.

Yesterday’s surprise NC State Howling Cow Ice Cream flavor launch had the Wolfpack ready for liftoff. 🚀🍦

At NASA astronaut and three-time NC State graduate Christina Koch’s homecoming celebration, Chancellor Kevin Howell surprised her with a limited-edition Howling Cow ice cream flavor created in her honor. The reveal of Howl at the Moon sent students running to the Howling Cow food truck, and Koch was just as excited to try it herself.

We’d like to thank our talented team at the NC State Department of Food, Bioprocessing and Nutrition Sciences for creating a flavor that brought even more excitement to an out-of-this-world homecoming.
