This was college + life in 1948.

Seven years after Clarence and Katherine Jacobsen began teaching four students around their kitchen table in Rapid City, the National School of Business graduating class had grown to 28 students.

25 of them were women.

At a time when women's educational and career opportunities were often limited by traditional expectations, schools like National School of Business offered pathways into professional careers.

The world has changed considerably since 1948. So have the students we serve and the obstacles they face.

But one idea continues to shape who we are:

Sometimes the problem isn't that students don't fit the traditional college model. It's that the traditional college model doesn't fit their lives.

85 years after our founding, National American University continues to rethink what higher education can look like for people whose lives don't follow a traditional path.

Different generations. Different obstacles. The same belief that opportunity shouldn't depend on fitting someone else's model.

Sometimes the best measure of great teaching comes directly from the student experience.

After completing Political and Leadership Analysis (INT580), NAU student Michael Bowser shared his appreciation for Professor Praveen Abhayaratne:
