University of Redlands

University of Redlands The University of Redlands is a private, nonprofit university that connects students to a world of opportunity, geared toward their passions and potential.

Founded in 1907, the University of Redlands is a private, nonprofit university that has prepared students for lives of meaning, impact, and joy for more than 100 years! Centrally located near the beaches, mountains and desert in the heart of Southern California, the University offers more than 50 undergraduate programs, as well as 20 graduate programs in business, communicative disorders, educatio

n, geographic information systems and music—blending liberal arts and professional programs, applied and theoretical study, traditional majors and self-designed curricula. For undergraduates, the University has one of the highest study abroad participation rates among its peers; a NCAA Division III athletic program contributes to the many extracurricular opportunities available; and students complete more than 120,000 hours of public service annually. The distinctive Johnston Center for Integrative Studies enables self-motivated undergraduates to negotiate their own interdisciplinary course of study with a faculty/peer committee. In addition to an award-winning 160-acre residential campus in Redlands featuring orange groves, architectural landmarks and more than 1,700 trees, the University includes seven regional locations, providing innovative programs at convenient places and times for working adults. Surveys show that generations of alumni have found that the University, established in 1907, prepared them well for career success and lifelong learning. See www.redlands.edu

Sienna Hepworth ’27 had calculated the odds. Hundreds of applicants yet only eight available spots — the numbers did not appear to be in her favor. Regardless of her doubts, the answer was yes. This summer, she will join seven other students selected from across the nation through the Science Foundation’s (NSF) Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program, traveling to the University of Rhode Island to work on science that stretches all the way to the Arctic.

A double major in environmental science and geographic information systems (GIS), Hepworth will work alongside Fulbright Scholar Dr. Brice Loose, validating a new protocol for measuring microplastic ingestion in Arctic zooplankton.

“I kept thinking I wasn’t going to get it,” she said. “But I also think that coming from University of Redlands looks unique on an application.”

Having completed research coursework and an internship abroad, Hepworth’s Redlands experiences made each step towards this opportunity feel like a natural progression. Along the way, faculty helped shape her confidence.

“As a Redlands student, professors are looking out for you,” she said. “Dan Klooster and Valerie Rountree have emailed me when they’ve come across something that may be in my best interest. It makes me think, ‘Why would I not get an internship or research project?’ Coming from a small liberal arts school and getting these opportunities — I think that totally speaks to a Redlands education.”

Beyond the experiences themselves, Hepworth’s REU research will be published, attaching her name to science that could inform how the world measures and responds to microplastic contamination in Earth's water.

“What sets this research apart is that the method we’re going to be looking at has not been researched before,” she said. “We’ll be making a new system, a new protocol for measuring microplastic ingestion in plankton, and that’s something that can have massive implications and is important to do research on.”

University of Redlands is proud to be named one of “America’s Best Colleges for Women 2026” — the inaugural list published by Newsweek and Gender Fair ranking U.S. colleges across four categories: leadership, pay and policies, safety, and opportunity. “The college experience should empower every student to reach their full potential, and for women, that means attending an institution that prioritizes leadership opportunities, equitable pay practices, campus safety and meaningful pathways to success.” — Jennifer H. Cunningham, Editor-in-Chief, Newsweek

Meet Ross Conkey, a visiting lecturer in Media and Communications at University of Redlands. Since joining the University in Spring 2015, Conkey has taught courses centered on screenwriting and filmmaking, helping students explore storytelling through both creative and technical lenses.

Conkey’s research exists within the same creative world as his teaching. As a screenwriter, he develops feature films, television pilots, and independent projects, often balancing several productions at once in stages ranging from outline development to pre-production. His work reflects a deep commitment to storytelling and the creative process behind bringing narratives to life on screen.

Outside of the classroom, Conkey is constantly creating. An avid woodworker, he is also drawn to learning new crafts and hands-on skills, including bookbinding, electronics, and cooking. His curiosity and passion for making continue to inspire both his personal and professional pursuits.

What has impacted Conkey most during his time at the University is the character of the student body. Having taught at other institutions, he feels U of R students stand out for their compassion and curiosity. He often notices students reaching out to classmates who may seem isolated or disengaged, creating a culture of empathy and connection in the classroom. Conkey believes that level of awareness transforms the learning experience, allowing conversations to become richer, deeper, and more meaningful for everyone involved.
