The Office of the Chaplain represents the University of Redlands' historical commitment to the life of faith within the academy and is an expression of the University's longstanding commitment to the education of the whole person. Since its founding in 1907, the University of Redlands has striven to be a place where a student's intellectual, spiritual and moral character can grow and flourish. The

Chaplaincy seeks to make welcome within our community the many religious traditions that flourish among our faculty, staff and student body. The Office of the Chaplain is committed to creating and sustaining opportunities for all University-recognized religious groups. We will make every effort to encourage and enable these faith communities to express and nurture their beliefs and to promote interfaith and interreligious dialogue and cooperation. We will seek to strengthen the bonds uniting persons of faith with all people of good will. We will also provide pastoral care and counseling to members of the campus community.

Join us to celebrate the Office of Compline on Sunday, May 23, at 6 p.m. PDT via https://vimeo.com/event/642980.

Service music will include works by composers Bruckner, Belkin, Rutter, Byrd, Vivaldi, and many more. We will sing the world premiere of “Ubi Caritas” by composition student Jamison Stevens ’22, composed and recorded during the pandemic.

The Office of Compline is rooted in the daily cycle of prayer observed by the early Christian monastic communities. By the 6th century, St. Benedict had codified the rule for his followers, setting forth a formula for the recitation of psalms, hymns, prayers, and readings seven times a day. Compline was the final prayer hour before retiring for the evening.

The service incorporates plainsong and diverse choral styles and genres, creating a unique blend of new and older musical traditions. As was customary in medieval chapels, Compline is offered by candlelight, and much of the music is unaccompanied. The unifying thread throughout the Compline service is quiet meditation and reflection led and inspired by music.

Mayor Paul Foster invites Redlands residents to join the City of Redlands and a host of local churches in a “Moment at 7,” honoring health care workers, first responders, grocery store employees and other helpers, beginning at 7 p.m. Sunday, April 12, and continuing each Sunday at 7 p.m. through the end of May.

Partnering with the Redlands Area Interfaith Council and the Redlands Service Club Council, the City of Redlands encourages residents to take a moment at 7 p.m. each Sunday through the end of May to go outside and ring bells, sound gongs, play instruments, bang on pots and pans or give a cheer for those caring for the people of our community, the nation and the world during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Local churches will be ringing their bells for one minute, the Redlands Fire Department will ring the bell outside Fire Station 261 in downtown Redlands and Police and Firefighters will flash their lights and sound their sirens in appreciation.

"How do you lift up the oppressed? On Racial Justice Sunday, we stand in solidarity with all the marginalized identities that people of color carry: immigrant, refugee, asylum-seeker, first-nation, female, gender-nonconforming, birthing parent, LGBTQ, low-income, disabled, unemployed, HIV+, drug-user, s*x worker, incarcerated, and so many more. If there isn't justice for folk of all identities and intersections, there is no justice."

If there isn't justice for folk of all identities and intersections, there is no justice.
