THE HISTORY OF THE NAME “CLYDE” 🐯

For years, one question about Reedley College history remained unanswered:

How did Clyde get his name?

Thanks to RC Historian Ken Zech and a discovery in the November 18, 1960 edition of Reedley College’s student newspaper, The Jungle Chant, we finally have the answer.

In 1960, Reedley College held a contest to name its tiger mascot.

The winning entry came from student Maybell Sherman, who chose the name “Clyde” and received a grand prize of… $5!

But here’s the best part: Clyde was only supposed to keep his new name for that school year.

Instead, the name stuck.

More than six decades later, generations of Reedley College students have known their tiger by the same name Maybell chose in 1960.

And now, as Reedley College celebrates 100 years, one of our longtime campus mysteries has finally been solved.

Clyde is Clyde because of Maybell Sherman and a $5 naming contest. 🐯 Do you think the name still suits our Tiger mascot?

Join us Saturday September 19th at 6pm for the first of our centennial celebrations, as we induct the Class of 2026 into the Tiger Athletic Hall of Fame! The class includes our four state championship teams and three individual state champions, two members of the 2014 football team, a women's basketball superstar, and an individual who left a lasting impression on our student-athletes for over three decades. We're also honoring a special guest with our Lifetime Achievement Award! Tailgate dinner tickets can be purchased for $25 apiece on our website, www.reedleycollege.edu . Admission to the induction ceremony following dinner is free. See you here!
