This week Fisheries Management students conducted a seine survey of the Forestry pond. Students collected 94 fish with one seine drag; 1 bullhead catfish & 93 Sacramento perch. Most of the perch were quite small but it’s evidence of reproduction. Scale samples were collected for aging. Stay tuned…

Dendrology students spent the first four weeks learning about morphology of plants. Now they’re headed into the field (weather dependent!) to test their skills and learn more about ID. They started close to home this week but there are many more field trips to come before the end of the semester. Stay tuned….

Wildlife Management students were checking wood duck nest boxes today. Wood ducks will start searching for nesting sites in a couple of months so we had to make sure the boxes were clean and ready for the breeding season. We were pleasantly surprised by a sleeping western screech owl (Megascops kennicottii) who found a warm bed in one of the boxes. We will check boxes again during the breeding season. Stay tuned…

NR 14 Wildlife Management students weren’t deterred by the weather today. Despite the drizzle we went out to the river looking for birds and working on our identification skills. Next week we’ll be conducting a Point Count Survey to estimate bird populations on campus.

Forestry students showed up ready to work at the 2023 Society of American Foresters National Convention in Sacramento. Our quiz bowl team, made up of students Delaney Haines, Ashton Ferry, Jesse Villegas, and Robert Ochoa, took the top score in the written exam portion placing them in the quarter finals. They placed 8th overall losing to State University New York (SUNY) in the first round of head-to-head competition. We are extremely proud of these students as we are all of our students. They beat out 24 other colleges including Humboldt, Berkeley, and Duke. Way to go Reedley Forestry!!!!

Even though Week 5 was a short week due to Labor Day, it was a busy one. This week, UVM students had a site visit to learn about clearing encroaching vegetation. They got to see a tree crew in action as well as seeing post work inspections first hand. Thanks to Aaron & Brandon from CFVM and Sarah Hendrix from Southern California Edison as well as the crew from Rolling Green and everyone else who took time to share with our students.

The NR 108 Field Studies course also met this week at Sequoia Lake where students got first hand experience clearing trails and running saws to name a few things.

Week 4 is in the books and Forestry students are working hard in the classroom as well as gaining valuable first hand knowledge in the field. NR 4-Forest Ecosystems students were learning about cells and cellular processes in the lab while students in NR-23 (Utility Vegetation Management) met with senior utility foresters from SCE and took a tour of the hydroelectric facility grounds to learn about how power is generated and flows to the end consumer. SCE’s hydroelectric project has been running since 1913, and has been providing clean energy by using the power of water. This hydro facility in Big Creek has earned its nickname as “the hardest working water in the world” and creates enough emissions-free electricity to power 640,000 homes!

NR14 Wildlife Management students made wood duck nest boxes today. The lumber was milled on campus and cut to size by students. We monitor approximately 30 nest boxes along about 1.5 miles of riparian zone on campus. These students will be installing their boxes later this semester and conducting nest surveys.
