UCED conducts applied and basic research studies, provides technical and management assistance services, offers counseling and referral services and sponsors workshops and seminars. UCED serves clients in both metropolitan and non-metropolitan areas in Nevada. Clients may include state government, community, organization or trade associations and, in some cases, business and industry and individua

ls. When selecting clients and projects, preference is given to those with potential to substantially enhance regional employment and income levels. Applied Research
The UCED conducts substantial research studies that focus on clearly defined development problems. Marketing studies, impact analyses, agribusiness studies, labor market studies, economic base studies and target industry analyses are among the applied research studies that UCED is prepared to undertake. Basic Research
Nevada is a rapidly growing state; its economy is undergoing substantial changes as the state looks to advanced technology and a service-based future. The UCED is in a unique position to conduct broad based studies that deal with economic and demographic changes, development trends, diversification, strategic development planning and the implications of natural resource, environmental and economic policies. Municipal, county and state agencies, and local industry or development organizations seeking a quick response to focused problems in regional development planning can look to UCED staff and consultants for solutions. Counseling and Referral Services

Another strategic plan in the books! On Tuesday, September 8, 2026, the The City of Elko City Council approved a new five-year, 2026 through 2030, organizational strategic plan for the City and for the community. Faculty and staff from the University Center for Economic Development helped facilitate the development of this new five-year strategic plan...including completing several one-on-one individual and small group meetings with internal and external stakeholders, community meetings with area residents, property owners, and business owners, a comprehensive community needs assessment survey, the collection and analysis of different local and regional socio-demographic, economic, and housing data, and several organizational strategic planning workshops.

The Annual Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook Off, with this year's event being held this past Labor Day Weekend in Sparks, Nevada, is one of the region's largest events, generating an estimated $24 million to $26 million annually in overall economic impact and is a major contributor of northern Nevada's tourism and hospitality industry sector.

Through the University Center for Economic Development, Nevada Tech Hub, is helping expand Nevada's emerging lithium batteries and other EV materials loop through targeted business creation, attraction, retention, expansion efforts and broad workforce development strategies. Day 2 of a two-day organizational strategic planning workshop for the Town of Tonopah was facilitated today on Thursday, September 3, 2026 by faculty and staff from the University Center for Economic Development. As part of this second day, workshop participants, consisting of elected and appointed officials and staff from the Town of Tonopah created a draft set of core values, a draft strategic mission and vision statement, a set of draft strategic organizational goals, and the beginnings of an action plan to help guide implementation over the next five years.

This week faculty and staff from the University Center for Economic Development, part of The College of Business at the University of Nevada, Reno, conducted a two-day strategic planning workshop with the Dresslerville Community of the Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California. The Dresslerville Community has embarked on an effort to develop a new five-year comprehensive organizational strategic plan as surrounding communities in Douglas County continue to experience increased growth. Participants began by completing a series of facilitated community and organizational assessment exercises on the first day and finished the second day by drafting a set of key core strategic elements.

Faculty and staff from the University Center for Economic Development, part of The College of Business at the University of Nevada, Reno, were in Tonopah, Nevada today, Wednesday, September 2, 2026, for the first day of a two-day strategic planning workshop for the Town of Tonopah.

The Town of Tonopah has embarked on an effort to develop a new five-year comprehensive organizational strategic plan as the community and surrounding area continues to experience increased growth from the development of several new and existing industry sectors, including mining and natural resource extraction, agricultural production, critical elements extraction and processing, and outdoor recreation.

During Day 1 of this two-day strategic planning workshop, Town of Tonopah elected and appointed officials and staff completed a series of facilitated community and organizational assessment exercises and finished the day developing a draft set of priority and primary issues.
