Celebrating another MSW graduate

Spring commencement ceremonies may be over, but we're still celebrating our ! Today's highlight is Rachel Casey, who graduated this spring with a Master's in Social Work from the UNR School of Social Work!

"Master of Social Work Summer 2026. I did it yalls!!!! I did it!!!!

This moment means more to me than any words could fully explain.

There was a time in my life when this felt impossible. I was a single mom trying to survive, navigating systems that were never meant to be easy, relying on welfare, food stamps, catching the public bus to TMCC rain or shine, and wondering if life would ever become more than just getting by, scrapping by…

I wasn’t handed a roadmap. I was trying to read it while walking it.

As a first-generation student, every step forward came with uncertainty. I balanced full-time work, full-time school, internships, parenting, poverty grief, trauma, exhaustion, and moments where I truly questioned if I could keep going.

But I did…..a lot of us did….

Not because it was easy, but because I knew there had to be more for my children, for my future, and for the people I hoped to help one day.

From TMCC to UNR, this journey transformed me in ways I never expected. Social work became more than a degree it became purpose. Through community work, advocacy, mutual aid, and serving vulnerable populations, I found healing in helping others.

I learned that our pain does not disqualify us. Sometimes it becomes the very thing that allows us to connect, empathize, and fight harder for others.

There were moments I felt completely alone carrying the weight of addiction in my family, losing my sibling, navigating difficult family dynamics, and silently battling depression, anxiety, and trauma.

But I refused to let those moments define my ending.

To my classmates thank you for the laughs, the snacks, the Starbucks and Dutch runs, the encouragement, and the shared understanding that only we could truly understand. We carried invisible stories into every classroom, and somehow we still showed up for each other rain or shine!

To my professors, mentors, family, friends, and my children, thank you for believing in me, especially during moments I struggled to believe in myself.

It is proof that cycles can be broken.

That healing is possible.

That education changes lives.

That resilience matters.

That people from difficult beginnings still deserve beautiful futures.

To anyone who feels unseen, unheard, stuck, or like they are starting from the bottom please keep going. Your story is not over yet. We are changemakers. We are advocates. We are social workers. And no matter where we go from here, we carry with us the responsibility and the privilege of making this world a little more just, a little more compassionate, and a little more human.

If I can make it here, so can you. This picture can be you.

Today's highlight is Melissa Alexander, who will graduate this spring with a master's degree in Social Work from the UNR School of Social Work!

"Hello, my name is Melissa Alexander, and I will graduate in Spring 2026 with a master’s in social work from the School of Social Work. In addition to my master’s in social work, I am a Mental Health Technician, an Early Childhood Educator, a former foster parent, and a mental health administrator. My educational journey began at Modesto Junior College, where I earned a degree in Child Development. After earning this degree, I identified a gap in the community. Working families had limited childcare options. To bridge this gap, I decided to open my own family childcare and preschool program. I was the first Black American woman to own an accredited family childcare program through the National Association for Family Child Care (NAFCC) in Stanislaus County.

In 2019, I moved to Reno, Nevada, to continue my education and career. Returning to school during the transition posed many challenges. Not only did I move across the state and have no friends besides my husband, but once I arrived, COVID hit. Despite multiple setbacks, I found ways to push through and refused to let these barriers prevent me from continuing my education.

As a first-generation college student, I began my journey at Truckee Meadows Community College, where I earned my Associate of Science in Social Work. After graduating from TMCC, I attended the University of Nevada, where I obtained my bachelor’s and Master of Social Work degrees. I am also proud to be a member of the Phi Kappa Honor Society. My passion has always been advancing social justice and empowering underserved and vulnerable populations through compassion, service, and change.

While working in social services, I also began advocating for clients in health care settings to provide more culturally responsive care. I began pushing for clients of color with textured hair (kinky, curly, coils) to have access to hair care products to maintain their hair while hospitalized. Once hospitals began to view hair as part of our overall well-being, they started to include culturally appropriate hair products in patient care.

I will continue to stand beside underserved and vulnerable communities to fight for voices to be heard, for equity, and for systemic change. Through my journey, I have proven to myself that I am resilient and strong, and I will do whatever it takes to uplift those around me. I plan to continue working with at-risk youth and vulnerable populations after I graduate, helping create opportunities that promote healing and growth.

My advice to new and current students is to never give up! There will be times in your life when you feel like you can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel, but remember that if you just keep going, you’ll realize YOU are the light that conquered the darkness. Allow your story, your resilience, and your PURPOSE to shine so brightly that it motivates the world around you."

Tuesday’s Competency 3 in Action: Critical Conversations with Social Workers event was a powerful gathering of learning and community! Our amazing panelists and UNR SSW alumni Xochitl Salinas and Jenny Pérez Batres shared real-world wisdom on what it looks like to engage in ADEI-centered practice. Thank you to our moderators, Jose Parra and Dr. Dominique Montgomery, for facilitating this meaningful dialogue. We’re grateful to everyone who came, connected, asked questions, and helped build a more equitable social work community. 💙
