Can you imagine a world where you can't read the scriptures for yourself?
For hundreds of years, the Bible was written in Latin, which meant that, unless you had studied the language, you had no way of knowing what was inside.
In the 14th century, John Wycliffe and his followers were the first to translate the Bible from Latin into English.
Over a century later, in the 1500s, William Tyndale did it again, this time translating the New Testament from the original Greek. His influence is still seen in the scriptures we read today.

The Viking mascot has a long history.
It began in the early days of Ricks College when Ricks athletes were jokingly referred to as “northerners” because “the other teams felt like it was really an excursion up to the land of ice and snow just to play a game” said Clyde Packer, Ricks College coach and athletic director for two decades. The nickname turned into "Norsemen" and then, in 1928, the school chose the Viking as its mascot.
Ricks College immediately adopted the characteristics of the Viking as a brave and bold warrior from an icy, northern home. Over the decades that followed, the mascot grew from simply a logo to a costumed performer, cheering on athletes and boosting school spirit, even winning first place in a cheerleading competition in 1988.
The Viking, officially named Thor after a naming contest in 1985, was an iconic part of Ricks College's student life and activities as he embodied the Spirit of Ricks for the whole student body, and now, we're excited to have him back!
Keep watching this page to learn more about the rich history of our beloved mascot.

Before Spirit Week, there was Founder's Day!

Founder's Day is the day when we celebrate and remember those who started our school and helped make it possible for us all to be here.

During its centennial Founder's Day festivities, Ricks College celebrated with a six-foot-tall birthday cake made with 300 pounds of cake mix and 100 pounds of icing, as well as concerts, commemorations, and more!

Swipe through for a look back at Ricks College's 100th birthday, and tell us: How are you celebrating 25 years of BYU-Idaho? 🎉

Coming soon! Let There Be Light: Tyndale's Words, 500 Years On

Starting October 1, the Arthur Porter Reading Room in the McKay Library will feature an exhibit about the life and works of William Tyndale, the man who fought for the Bible to be printed in English and whose words are still found in the scriptures we read today!

The exhibit open house will be held Thursday, October 15, and there will be several opportunities throughout the week to hear lectures about Tyndale and his influence on history.

You can see the online exhibit at https://spc.byui.edu/exhibits/exhibitions/149-let-there-be-light-tyndale-s-words-500-years-on

📚 How well do you know the history of the McKay Library?

The library students use today is part of a much longer story at BYU-Idaho. Our History of the Library exhibit explores how the library has grown and changed alongside the university—and the people who have used it.

Stop by Special Collections to explore photographs, documents, and stories from the library's past, and discover some of the history behind a place many of us use every day, or check out the online exhibit at https://spc.byui.edu/exhibits/exhibitions/65-mckay-library-history
