In the early 18th century, the relationship between and public houses was foundational.

Birth of the Grand Lodge: The world’s first Grand Lodge was famously formed on June 24, 1717, when four existing London lodges met at the Goose and Gridiron Ale-house.

Neutral Grounds: During that era, taverns were central community hubs. They provided the only large, convenient meeting spaces where diverse social classes—from skilled laborers and merchants to bankers and nobles—could sit together in a " " environment.

American Traditions: This tradition carried over to the colonies. 's first Masonic home was Tun Tavern in 1730, and George Washington was initiated at a lodge in that met in a tavern setting.

Meeting "On the Level": While the tavern provided the physical space for equality, the term "on the level" specifically refers to the stonemason’s tool used to ensure surfaces were perfectly horizontal.
