COVID-19 Campus Update
Comets,

I write to provide you an update on the status of our campus response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Our positive case counts and the positivity rates from our daily health check and proactive testing programs make it clear that the risk of COVID-19 transmission on our campus is much lower today than at the beginning of the fall semester. I want to thank you all for the actions you have taken, including mask wearing and vaccination, that have brought us to this much more positive state of affairs.

I believe our vaccination rates, in particular, deserve much of the credit for the current public health environment on campus, and a recent report from the Texas Department of State Health Services underscores the efficacy and importance of vaccinations in fighting COVID-19. The report finds that for the period of Jan. 15 to Oct. 1, 2021, unvaccinated individuals were 45 times more likely to have a COVID-19 infection than fully vaccinated individuals and that unvaccinated individuals were 40 times more likely to die from COVID-19 associated causes than fully vaccinated individuals. These findings come from cases in Texas, not nationally, and starkly illustrate the increased risks of illness and death that the unvaccinated face compared to the fully vaccinated. The full report provides a great deal of additional detail, including infection and death rates by age groups, and I encourage those who remain skeptical of COVID-19 vaccinations to read it carefully.

Thank you again for the concern and care you have shown for one another throughout the pandemic. I look forward to a safe and healthy conclusion to our fall semester, and, as always, I thank you for being Comets United.

Sincerely,

Dr. Rafael Martín
Vice President and Chief of Staff

From the Office of the President

September 22, 2021

Dear Colleagues:

I am writing to update you on our classroom de-densification plan, which has been in place since the start of the fall semester. At this time, we believe that the pandemic environment in North Texas is beginning to improve and will continue to do so in the coming weeks. Further, our proactive testing program has shown that the incidence of active COVID-19 cases in our campus community remains very low, with a less than 1% positivity rate over almost 25,000 tests. Our daily health check and contact tracing programs have ensured that we are quickly able to detect and isolate possible COVID-19 cases.

As such, I am pleased to announce that following an extension of classroom de-densification through Friday, Oct. 1, we will resume full classroom density on Monday, Oct. 4.

Your cooperation in adhering to our plan and in following the advice of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention makes our return to the full classroom experience possible. However, we must not let our guard down. We must continue to take the actions that we know will keep our campus safe for everyone: get vaccinated, wear face coverings indoors and practice good hygiene.

If you have not already done so, you are encouraged to get a COVID-19 vaccine and to register your vaccination status through our voluntary vaccine reporting form. Students can schedule an appointment to receive a vaccine at no cost through the Student Health Center. Students, faculty and staff are eligible for a $125 incentive when reporting their vaccination status through the end of the month.

I am very proud of our success in navigating the challenges that the current pandemic surge presented. Thank you for doing your part to safeguard our community, and thank you for being Comets United.

Sincerely,

Dr. Richard C. Benson
President
Eugene McDermott Distinguished University Chair of Leadership
