Check out what our Watershed Science class is up to! This work is part of a Wayne County Soil & Water Conservation District 205j grant to monitor the East Fork Whitewater River watershed for a year and then write a Watershed Management Plan. We’re devastated to learn that Dave Puig (Hibbard-Rode), class of 2008, died from a construction-related injury on Tuesday. Dave is remembered as a consistently upbeat person who tried hard to make everyone around him feel better about the world.

Dave was in the first class I taught at Earlham (Landscapes and Soils), and I remember him biking in from the old Miller Farm every morning, arriving a little late, and bursting into class to warm his hands up on the projector. It is very difficult to envision someone for whom life was so obviously to be enjoyed being taken so soon. We will miss him greatly. —Andy

Alex, Katherine, and Madison completed another successful field season in the Whitewater River just before classes began. This year we focused on the dam’s impact on water quality as well as resurveying sections of the river up and downstream of the dam. We found a surprising amount of sediment stored behind the dam eroded since last summer. For more information stop by our poster at Epic Expo Oct 14th Homecoming weekend!

Just back from a month in Southern California where we mapped Miocene fossil sites, practiced photogrammetry on mammoth teeth and a Pliocene whale skull, and surveyed the museum campus. Looking forward to more collaboration with the Western Science Center, including an upcoming presentation at GSA!
